Installing Communitas?

looks as if it works OK - it doesn't include a custom DLL, which would be the only issue for Mac compatibility.

Why not try it? It can't break your Civ5 installation.

Can you explain what DLL is though?

DLL stands for Dynamic Linked Library, and Civ5 includes a DLL file called CvGameCoreDLL.dll, which is the part of Civ5 that defines a lot of the basic rules of the game.

Windows users can download a software developer's kit (SDK). This includes the source code for the CvGameCoreDLL.dll file. They can modify that code and recompile it to create a new version of that file, to be included in a mod. The Windows version of Civ5 can then use that file in place of the standard one when it loads the mod, and then it will operate to different rules.

The Mac versions of Civ5 cannot use a modified version of the CvGameCoreDLL.dll file, so if a mod includes one, it will not work with the Mac versions.

I am having an issue. I purchased a new iMac and I am trying to get communitas working on it. I followed the same instructions again:

Download the zip, unzip it and placed the contents into the MODS folder but when I boot up Civ the MODS option doesn't exist. I am really confused what I am doing wrong this time. When I unzip the file I get 4 items all ending with .civ5mod if that is correct.

First, you have to re-enable the MODS menu. Second you have to download and install the mod you want. It sounds as if you haven't done the first part, and you are not extracting the mod correctly. You should not end up with any .civ5mod files, as they are compressed files that have to be extracted to produce the folders you place in your Mods folder..

The simplest way to do all of this is to follow the update at the top of instructions in the first post in the sticky post on installing mods. This links to this post, where I've provided a simple process for doing the entire job without the need to edit anything, extract the mods or track down folders.
