Insufficient video memory allocation error

I am getting the following error. The game hangs and sometimes my system hangs. It happens after an hour or so of playing.

Failed to allocate video memory. Please try reducing your graphics settings.
File:\Source\main\Civilization4\SDKs\Gamebryo2_0\CoreLibs\NIDX9Renderer\NIDX9VBManager.cpp, Line:1019

I have twin ATI X1900 with 512 Mb Ram each. I have a Dual core P4-3.2 GHz with 4 Gb RAM. I run at 1920x1200 resolution.

This problem did not occur when I was playing Civ IV 1.61, only with the new Warlords add-on.

Has anyone experienced this problem?

Unfortunately, Take2 support's only response was to reduce my graphics settings if downloading and installing the latest ATI catalyst drivers didn't work. Probably was a standard help desk response I got.

In order to play at the highest detail, I have to drop my screen resolution down to under 1600x1200 and reduce the screen detail to medium. The game is certainly a lot uglier to look at.

What I may do instead is go back to playing Civ4 vanilla as I never had any probs until I installed the Warlords add-on. The few extra civs and units Warlords added really didn't affect gameplay all that much anyways. Hopefully in the next update there will be better ATI high-end graphics support.

:(

Possibly an issue with crossfire (does Civ4 even use both vid cards)? Try disabling it (simple exe name edit should do it if ATI hasn't implemented a profile manager yet).

Thanks, CivDude. :)

Just got a reply back from Take2 support and they said the same thing, to disable the Crossfire features. Basically the X1900 line of graphics cards are not fully supported which means that even if Crossfire is disabled, I may not still be able to run the game. The odd thing is that the game worked fine with the vanilla Civ; I am only having problems with Warlords.

I was thinking of somehow exporting the Warlords updates as a mod for the vanilla Civ4 and using the vanilla game engine. I am thinking the reduced video memory fix they added with the v1.61 patch probably made the vanilla work and though Warlords has the v1.61 incorporated, they may have had to increase video memory requirements for Warlords. Just guessing.

I may try and switch out the Crossfire and fallback to the old nVidia 7300, only got the Crossfires so I could play games like Oblivion. :mischief: Certainly don't have the bucks to shell out for the 1 Gb RAM X1950 cards... :(

I've had the same problem today on two different huge maps.Earth and Iceage 20000 bc. This problem has never happend before and all drivers and updates for xp-pro and my ati 9600 128 mb card is up to date.Tryed to reduce the graphics settings, but no help.

I play Civ IV 1.61

I've played some more(tryed to  ) and got a new error message:confused: se the thumb

If someone can figure it out it would be verry helpful.

I've got the same problems as above with Civ IV and have tryed to reduse my graphic settings but nothing helped. Then i deleted the game moved my stiings an savegames to an other map, installed the game and updated it and tryed to play:confused: and it crached again:mad:
I scaned my pc for viruses again, with two other virus-scaners but found nothing ;)
To day i got Civ IV Warlordand fore some reason hoped that this would solve it, but hey:sad: suprise... NOT

I grabed some screenshots and from my last game and pasted them together and hoped that someone out ther is a The Man and solves the problem.

And it does not help to reduse the graphic setings. at least not for me. And strangely I've played the Civ IV for over a year without a glitch:confused:

My putter is an AMD xp1800+ 1024 mb ram
Ati graphic card radeon 9600 pro 128 mb

:wallbash: :help: :aargh: :dunno: :suicide: :sniper: :ar15: :run:

I think ATI graphics cards are not properly supported. I've reduced my settings to 1024x768, the lowest I can go, with all enhanced graphics features turned off (no video even). The game plays for a bit longer (about 6-10 years instead of 1-3) before it crashes with insufficient video memory. I have updated to latest ATI drivers and games that are even more graphics intensive such as Oblivion, Doom and Unreal play just fine. I suspect there is a memory leak in the display engine. At this rate, I am getting real tired of playing Civ as it's a pain to swap video cards just to play the game. Grrr.

I had the same problem with the video allcoation memory problem since warlords v1.61 after I had updated my ati drivers (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro). The only solution for me was to go back to an older ati driver I had found on a old driver disk. This fixed it, so I could play Civ4 Warlords again. But after updating Warlord to 2.08, it hangs massivly at every turn and crashes sooner or later with this video allocation memory problem again.

Firaxis, you screwed this up!

I had a Radeon x300, and Catalyst 6.7 worked perfect for me.
The problem started when I installed Catalyst 6.9.

So try to install 6.7.

Hopefully, hopefully:wallbash:

I have found an other link on this problem here at the forum http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=171956 and tryed their tips.

This is wat I have done so far:

- Increased my virtual memory.(it's set to X 1.5 my physical memory).

- Reduced my graphic settings.

- Reinstalled direxX9c and everything looks fine.

- Reinstalled the games. (CivIV w\1.61 patch and Warlords w\2.08)

Stil i got the "Failed to allocate video memory" error message:mad:

Then i went to http://www.firaxis.com/support/support_detail.php?gameid=6&cat=5 and tryed this tip.
Out of Memory Error

If you are getting a video memory allocation warning, you should try reducing the graphics level (in the options menu) to low. If it still occurs and you want to ignore the warning, find this value in the config (ini) file, HideOutOfVRamWarning, and set HideOutOfVRamWarning = 1 using notepad.

Now i can play a bit longer, (to the end of classical age) then my putter just frezze and stop responding. "ctrl+alt+del" and "alt+F4" and "alt+tab" and "alt+esc" did not work. After 2.5 hours I shut it down the hard way:badcomp:

I have the same card and the same problem.

I bought Sid Meier's Railroads and it required me to update my drivers. After I installed catalyst 6.9 the game would sometimes run out of memory.

I started playing warlords again and am running out of memory here too. I'm downloading the warlords patch right now hoping that will help.

Yes, I have both games (Civ4 Warlords and SM Railroads) and it looks to me that the Video Allocation Errors have something to do with the Catalyst upgrades that the games will do automaticly.
Maybe the reason is because I use a non english version of the latest catalyst drivers and the games do not recognize them correctly and "downgrade" it to a total mess.
After deleting both games completely, removing the catalyst driver COMPLETLY (important!) using the small ATI removing tool, rebooting, I reinstalled the latest ATI drivers.
Then I installed the games NOT using autorun, instead browsing the CD and running setup, now the games seem to work. I cannot tell if CIV 4 Warlords works for hours until the end, because I havent played a game so far, SM Railroads is my favourite right now... ;)

To say it again, it is important that you use the ATI removing tool, otherwise it will not work. I tried it several times only upgrading the drivers, with no success.

It would be interesting if this procedere solves the problem for other people.

I would love to upload the small ATI remove tool. But I am sure it is prohibited by some stupid law and would cause trouble to this wonderful website, so the only thing I can do is to post a link to the new AMD website for more info...

I totaly deleted CivIV and Warlords. Then updated my drivers to my chipset inkluding the agp driver. After that i deleted the ati driver and deleted any trace of it in the regestry, restartet my putter and installed the new Catalyst 6.11. Installed CivIV and Warlords, updated them in the game and have hapely played Warlord for over 5 hours whitout any glitch:clap: and will be playing all night long:rotfl:

I hope this is helpful for the rest of you out there:wavey:

i am getting the same error message but it seems to be when i get to about the 1900's time frame in game. i have looked into updating my different drivers liked talked about above but the update says i am up to date. the newest driver date is from 2005 and some are as old as 2001. i dont have any updates patched because when i do patch them it will not properly run when i click on it. atleast without hte patches i can play till the 1900's.

is there a different way to update instead of through properties on "my computer"?

my info is: gateway laptop, 7500 series, AMD Athlon64 1.58GHz, 1gig memory, windows xp,

graphics card: ATI Mobility Radeon X600 w/128meg of memory on that.

any and all help is greatly appreciated. thank you.

*edit*
i do not have the warlords expansion but i have the beyond the sword expansion
