Agreed, they probably have a massive army of Swordsmen. You know how dangerous those things can be.

Out of curiosity, why did you bother to invade the Aztec/Viking/Japan island?

After consultation with my military advisor we have called off the invasion of Spain. It took our spies 353gp to review all five spanish cities - money we could have used to build a library.

The money was well spent, however. Madrid is heavily defended with 4 spears and a sword with another spear due next round - and it has the production capacity to produce a new spearman every two rounds!

Santiago is their second stronghold with 3 spears, a sword, a settler and a galley with a sword due in 2 turns.

The remaining 3 cities have no less than 2 spears, most have a sword as well. It is clear to me that my dreams of spanish silver will need to wait until Modern Armor.

Seriously - they have NOTHING. Practically no buildings - every city has a temple, only 1 harbor. They must have been disbanding units as fast as they made them all game long. The fact that they don't even know masonry in 1320 AD is scary.

With a military that small and running 40% Science, why would they need to disband units? They have 20 free units from being in Despotism, and they don't look like they have many more.

That island has all of the spices in the world (there was a pile of 8 all right on top of each other) and they also had some incense, the two native luxuries I was missing. And the Aztecs had 6 cities and were at war with the Vikings, who were kicking their butt with the very same scary stack of swords you mentioned.

Since I am waiting for a 20k victory I've been fighting mostly defensive wars to fish for leaders to rush every known culture producing building in the world in Bejing. Of course I meandered my way through the game before deciding on a 20K victory so the victory date will be pretty pathetic. Still, I'm starting to appreaciate the difficulties of a 20K victory!

I was going to wipe Carthage of the map but they have ended up to be my most valuable trading partner - techs for gpt. I grabbed the GLB and banked about 8kgp before it expired, the rest is primarily from Carthage gpt. Everyone else is always broke.

What else explains it? We are 254 turns into the game. Their capital alone should have produced around 100 spears. Even if we discount some productivity for lack of quick worker development, how could they have less than 50 spears from their capital alone? They haven't been running science too high given their known techs - and since Carthage met them first and they have no gold left, it is possible they bought a few of the ones they know from Carthage at bargain basement prices.

Total techs known are: BW, IW, Alpha (free), Writing, Phil, CoL, MM, Pottery, TW, HBR, WC & CB (free). Of the 12 they know, 4 are 1st tier (+ 2 free).

You know what would be really, really mean? You gift them up to The Republic, but no other government techs. Chances are they will revolt.

As of now, they have for happyness:
2 content faces built-in
2 content faces from MP
1 content face from temples

Which means they can support city sizes up to 6: 5 laborers and 1 entertainer. Lack of surplus food forbids more.

In a Republic they would get:
2 content faces built-in
1 content face from temples

Which would restrict them to city sizes of up to 4: 3 laborers and 1 entertainer. Lack of surplus food would still apply, given what I have seen from the map.

That is actually exactly what I did last night - and I thought I was being nice! I gave them Masonry just because I felt sorry for them, then gave them republic so they had a nice new government. Didn't think about the happiness issue - or unit support. Maybe the invasion is back on!

Believe me, my invasion will proceed with the utmost caution. And we will leave our ration of bacon at home just in case Theov is amongst the defenders.
If you leave your bacon strips & bacons strips at home, then what is your army going to wrap their meatballs in??

Oh no! A mighty Russian invasion! What shall I do?

Spoiler Cathy tries to take my Capital :

That's pretty scary. Think about it. We all know that Tanks and Spearmen (:spear:) have an attack to defense ratio of 8:1, correct? Sipahis and Warriors have the exact same ratio! What does that mean? Your Sipahis are about to get :spear:'d. However, you could attack with that Guerilla and you'll be fine. :goodjob:

 I hadn't thought about that! Luckily my Sipahi just about kept the Warrior at bay, but it was close - I lost 0 HPs.

You only lost 0 HP's against the almighty warrior? You must have the luckiest Sipahi in the world.

We have seen various pics of this sort of temerity but this one really hit my funny bone.

What was particularly amusing was the fact I was watching the Caravel sail all the way around the island, obviously looking for that exact pre-determined spot to land whatever it was going to land, and I really at the least expected a Longbow. Or maybe a couple of Horses. It was so... anticlimactic.

Quint had one in Conquest of the World where a Jaguar Warrior (?) was dropped off by a transport and some other modern ships.

Now that would be funny to see. Gotta love those gutsy AI.

The AI is just unable to do such naval warfare. Even on SID it is unable to do it correctly.

Oh I don't know about that. The AI perfectly placed that warrior to sever the landbridge east-west. Now all those newly units will need to rail through Iznik to get past him. Attacking him is definatley out of the question with mere Sipahi as the only offensive units available.

If only you had built a coastal fortress at Zonguldak you might have prevented this horrible military blunder.
