if you are going to save and reload , move ALL of your units out of the city . "Half of the time" the cultural flip will not happen . And if it is going to happen , you are at least saving the units . Playing Monarch , have no idea if it works on other difficulty settings .

Yes, it is cheating. A few years back I would have considered the whole game is corrupt at that point. I was trying to play to a "game of the month" standard back then.
Question; I have the Steam version. It doesn't come with Play the World?

It comes with all the art-assets that were packaged with PtW (WWII units, Japan units, Dino units), a bunch of .bix files in the ../Scenarios folder, and the PtW Editor -- but no, it doesn't actually include the Civilization3X.exe file that you need to play the game.
 
Not a particularly interesting screenshot, but not worthy of its own thread. Due to recent threads about 'quick games', and the weakness of (AI) Seafaring Civs (due to corruption) I persevered as the Byzantines with one of the worst starts I've ever seen, with 5 land tiles for my capital city (and no accessible fresh water for it). At the end of the expansion phase I had no iron, no horses and lost 3 of my capital's five land tiles to Mongol culture (because my settings disable the palace (and its culture) at Mapmaking). Constantinople below has to be the most sorry excuse for a capital city I have ever seen.

I gambled on not settling where Kazan was because I wanted the ivory at Adrianopole and wrongly assessed nobody would settle between my two cities and so close to my capital. Oops!

I only carried only playing to see how quickly I could get through the game, fully expecting the inevitable defeat the second when any AI would attack me. For context, I lose at least 90% of the time on my custom Emperor difficulty settings - even when on favourable land and trying really hard.

I repelled a Persian amphibious attack down to my last spearman (all other units in the above screenshot were Kings in mass regicide). So the game didn't end there.

This kickstarted the most absurd run of luck I have ever had in the game, including:

1) I started getting luxuries appearing in my limited territory (I phase in luxuries with techs in a similar way to resources).

2) I made peace with the Persians just before the Incans flooded my defenceless cities, and the Persians accepted all my luxuries to make an MPP the turn before the Incans attacked. Persian units that had landed to kill me then moved to attack the Incans and saved my cities.

3) The AI had much bigger empires than my pathetic effort and as such, would accept luxury for luxury swaps without me having to pay much. I ended up with about 7 luxuries (4 owned, 3 imported). By tying these luxury for luxury trades to RoPs for hundreds of turns the bigger AIs became fairly placid to me even though I was feeble.

4) A settlement I desperately planted to the southern end of my landmass in tundra in the midst of a medieval era barbarian horde of 3/2/2 horseman survived the one turn to enable my settler to settle on a hill. With just one spearman defending that settler against the horde. This same settlement survived the Industrial era barbarian horde from the same hut because the Greeks had sent its doomstack of cavalry to kill the barbarian hut and arrived just in time to absorb all the damage from the emerging barbarian horde, leaving my city unpillaged.

5) I never got saltpeter (spearmen until the Industrial era) but ended up getting every other later resource excluding oil and uranium. I had to give away techs to get iron for factories and railroads.

6) The neighbouring Vikings and Mongols were stronger than me, but were the two weakest AIs. For some reason never attacked me, despite me having spearmen and longbowmen whilst half the world had riflemen (and game settings being max aggression). I got nationalism as my free tech, so could finally replace my spearmen, then the Mongols and Vikings start hammering each other. I get replacement parts and make 3x artillery (personal limit) and a longbowmen horde and dog pile on to the Vikings, then turn on the Mongols. I still have no iron or horses but at least I have an empire now and this complete joke of a game might be salvagable. I am able to buy a cathedral and Constantinople reclaims its 3 land spaces it lost to the Mongol culture. :D

7) The bigger empires of Greece and Spain have a modern era battle. Greece is so, so bad at fighting and somehow makes no inroads against the much smaller Spanish empire. By this time I've managed to obtain Oil by giving Maya 3x luxuries and 150GPT per turn! The tanks, bombers, modern armour all get generated and I rip through the tiny ruined shell of the Spanish that Greece left for me. Just in time as Madrid was at 17,000 culture and risking a 20k victory.

8) I reach my 30% domination victory conditions with the far away Russians stuck on just 5 Spaceship parts. It seems I had so many late game resources that the other AIs were struggling to even build their ship.

I have spent the best part of a year losing to small, technologically advanced Civs on the Demigod cost factor settings and with the exact same settings I somehow pulled out a W in this turdfest!? Its better to be lucky than good.
 
From the same game. I could not understand how I could not gain cultural control of the space where the mongol (yellow) crusader is, yet I had cultural control of the square below it. Any thoughts?

In essence I had control of a tile 3 spaces away from Heraclea but only two spaces away from Reykjavik (and Almarikh). Yet, the Vikings had control of a tile just 2 spaces from Heraclea and 3 spaces away from their nearest cities.

I was desperate for the square with the crusader so I could plant a city and secure the iron (by this time the AI were very, very reluctant to give me any resources to pursue my wars further, so I needed my own source). In the end I had to take it by force, which I consider a personal failing as a cultural obsessive!

Any two step 8,6,2 or 4 counts as a distance of 3. Any one such step counts as 1.5 distance, but total distance is rounded down to integer. Just think of how culture expands at 10, 100, 1000 and 10000 culture if unopposed.

Almarikh-8-8 is at distance 3 (unlocked at 100 culture) from Almarikh, Reykjavik and Heraclea.

Almarikh-8-8-8 is at distance 3 from Copenhagen, Reyklavik and Heraclea.
 
I'm guessing that Heraclea has more culture than Almarikh and Reykjavik, so you have control of the tile that's a distance of 3 away from all of those cities, but Copenhagen has more culture than Heraclea, so it grabs the crusader tile for the Vikings.
