they irrigate bonus grasslands.

Thats not bad actually, if given the choice, its better to irrigate bonus grass than non-bonus grass. (because of golden age or mobilization)

The Only thing the AI does wrong is that they Irrigate more than needed.

I honestly don't understand how y'all play the game by throwing away 1000's of shields so some fat slobs can get 3 squares a day. I can barely make budget with shields.. how do you do it without them?

MAS typo-ed that. As a general tip it's better to mine the regular grass and irrigate the bonus grass unless you are still in despotism.

My style of play is a "loose" CxxC city spacing scheme. I mine the BG's in the early game and do other normal improvements like irrigating most of food bonus like game or wheat (mining on occasion though). When I get out of despotism, I'll start to irrigate some grass tiles to make the core cities grow faster. When the cities get to size 12, and especially once I get everything railed (if that game lasts that long), I will go back through and mine most every tile for max shields. My goal is to have just enough food to support a stable size 12 pop and then max out the shield production. I rarely play for metros and so the extra food is wasted otherwise.

The style of play requires some re-doing of improvements over time, but I find it's best for my empire's development from early game --> non-despotism --> size 12 core cities. I always have boatloads of workers by the time rails hit so the improvement changes go fast.

I don't understand your question, darski. Who's throwing away thousands of shields and how?

I think he's asking how getting extra food as opposed to extra shields is helpful.

I try to bring the city populations to maximum without getting any specialists, and maximize shields.

I guess some people go for specialists. I never use spec farms, but I guess each citizen eats 2 food and produces 2 commerce. Once you have civil engineers (specialists who produce shields) it makes sense to max out food and use them, as their shields are uncorrupted, (no waste), and IIRC you get the same amopunt of food as shields if you switch all mines to irrigation.

You're probably right about what she's asking. In my core, I also try not to use any specialists. In the hinterlands, though, I use specialist farms pretty heavily. Each specialist does eat 2 food, but they changed the specialists for Conquests. What you get in vanilla (which darski has) is different from what you get in Conquests. I very rarely use civil engineers, though. Their shields are only good for improvements . . . . . I also know that they added at least one specialist in Conquests, but I can't remember if it is the police officer, the civil engineer, or both. So darski may not have access to all of the specialists and those that she does have won't be as effective, anyway.

Ok, that is the trick. By playing Vanilla, I need every shield I can get. I do have the less corrupt mod (bic) which does give me uncorrupted shields if I make them

grassland has no shield value unless mined, Bonus grassland gets 2 shields if mined.. I need those shields.

I also tend to claim every land form known to Civ and there is almost no shield production in desert tiles- I need that all as food (oil loves desert). I have to make that up elsewhere.

It was both. And you're correct about them not being as effective- taxmen and geeks only give 1 gold/1 beaker per turn instead of 2 gold/3 beakers per turn.

It may also be related to playstyle. As I've never looked at any of your saves, I can't say for sure, but I suspect that you're building quite a few more improvements than some of the players to whom you're referring. If that's the case, it becomes a matter, not only of total shield numbers, but where you're investing them.

But I do maximize shields in non-hopelessly-corrupt cities!
If I don't need the food I'd certainly not irrigate any grass tile.
If I do need the food I irrigate the bonus grass over the non-bonus grass, the total shield output of the city working both tiles isn't effected negatively.

What this thread needs is.... more pictures! Here is something I thought was funny in a recent game:

Spoilered because I was too lazy to edit it.

Now that is a funny line. Kudos to the developer who came up with that one

They must have had some workers joining the city. There are only two barbs btw, the lady is Egyptian.

His point is that there's nowhere they could have gotten those barbarian workers.

Unless, of course, they captured a couple from the Mayans.
