Actually, Theo had really bad luck losing two cities to a volcano like that. How often does one erupt per game - every so-many thousand years? And each time the odds are 8/1 against that the city tile is the one polluted.

I read here that once a volcano erupts you know where it will hit every time as it always pollutes the same tiles. is this not true? I have been counting on this to be true

I posted that once here. I got it from someone else, but I believe there have been people that paid close attention, and noticed that volcano eruptions always affected the same tiles.

What I'm sure of, is that in Theodora's example at least 3 of the 8 tiles surrounding the volcano could never be hit, because I'm counting 3 coastal tiles there, and only land tiles get hit. And more than just one, usually, isn't it?

I really enjoyed the Volcano One, Thanks for Posting it Abraxan

I think the really rotten thing about her luck is that she lost 3 cities to that volcano in ~1400 years! (1910 BC-490 BC). She is determined to have that wine!

Wine that comes from the unique grapes that have been cultivated with volcano ash.

A rare delicacy, if I do say so myself. ;)

@Optional: Yeah, Sea Tiles can't be erupted into and it's not one tile that get's polluted, it's 2 or 3.

I don't know if anything like this has been posted before (haven't checked all 80 pages of this thread), but I thought I'd share my carpet-bombing and destruction of a rival civ:

Backstory: My civ is on another continent. I got an early tech lead and since I enjoy playing as a builder I decided to coast through the game for a space race victory. Any wars I fought were to gain control of my continent and pacify two nearby small continents.

By the beginning of the 1800s China had gone fascist and was taking control of a nearby continent, destroying the Japanese at the top part of the map. They were also beginning to share tech with the neighboring Mongols and English and all three were catching up to me. I figured that I should try and take them out some way, but I didn't have the desire to occupy a distant continent or let the Mongols and English take over the resource rich cities either.

In the end, I provoked a war by lining up some subs, sending a privateer close to the Chinese coast, and luring a Chinese frigate to the subs, leading to an attack. I then let loose with 120 stealth bombers. It took me about 20 turns to bomb every city improvement, almost every tile, and then send armor and assorted ground units to raze the Chinese cities. I made the mistake of bombing units first -- the Mongols and English declared war and were taking over the cities. By destroying the cities last, I was able to cut off their advance and leave the continent ripe for redevelopment -- the Mongols and English would have to clear all that land and build workers and settlers, rather than military units to challenge me.

Actually, the best coffee comes from trees that have been grown on volcanic ash, which is generally quite fertile. Hawaiin Kona coffee is grown on volcanic soils, as is most of the Columbian that reaches the market. That is also one of the reasons that Mt. Etna in Sicily is so popular a place for farming, orchards, and vineyards.

That continent will take centuries to rebuild!

Let me get this straight. You were going for a Space Race win, and had already researched Stealth Technology. You then get worried because the Chinese are catching up to you. So you take the turns and resources to build about 120 Stealth bombers, provoke a Declaration of Way, and then devote about 20 turns to producing the picture on display. You are worried that the Mongols and English, that are still behind you in tech will challenge you with military units. The Mongols are still using cavalry, and the English have guerillas. Why did you not simply build the Space Ship and launch? 120 Stealth Bombers cost 14,400 shields, which is a lot more than the space ships parts cost.

I guess that I could see doing this destruction if you were going for a conquest or domination victory. For a Space Race victory is seems a little excessive.

I wanted to build up my home continent, and had the bombers already, due to some very productive cities. :)

I'm sorry if I implied that I was sane. ;)

You NUTS!(anyone who knows what I'm referring to gets a virtual cookie)

BTW congratulations darski on your 1000th post! Good luck on getting to regent.;)

Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Darski, you should really enjoy this one. :)

In a recent game as the Celts, I had Theodora as a neighbor. I built an embassy in Constantinople. Soon thereafter, I discovered . . .

Spoiler :
that she had built her capital next to a volcano.

I'm sure that you can imagine where the story goes from here:

Spoiler :
The volcano erupted, destroying Constantinople.

Not to be deterred by such rotten luck, Theo persisted . . .

Spoiler :
and built Varna on the same spot.
theovolcano003so2.jpg

Well, Mother Nature was not about to be deterred, either.

Spoiler :
And She destroyed Varna, just like she had Constantinople.

Mother Nature had spoken. Apparently, Theo wasn't listening.
Spoiler :
She promptly put Trebizond on the very same spot!

I was reminded of a scene from a Monty Python movie. At the moment, I don't recall whether it was the Life of Brian or the Meaning of live, but it's a medieval scene in which the lord of the manor wants to talk to his son (who keeps trying to break into song.) "They said I was daft to build a castle in a swamp, but I built one anyway. It sank. So I built a second one. It sank, too. So I built a third one. It burned down, fell over, then sank. So I built a fourth one. And it stayed up!"

What graphic mod are you using. I noticed your tiles have extra buildings on them. What are they for?

If you're talking about the tile 1 N, 1 NW of Constantinople in the first picture, that's a wooden mine tower. I downloaded it off of this site. Otherwise, most of what I use is Snoopy's, I think. It's been a while since I swapped them out. Oh, and I also use some stone roads that I downloaded off of CFC.

That continent will take centuries to rebuild!

i wouldn't say forever... seeing as he's an industrious civ, and has already got replaceable parts, if he switches to fascism, and then makes about 3-5 boatloads of workers, i don't suspect it would take that long

seeing as that combo makes it so that you can build roads in one turn, then railroads in two (on grassland), i'd say it could go by pretty quickly
