Interesting Times - The AI Side of RFC

:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

Well, guys, I have some very bad news. I committed the biggest blunder in my time playing RFC - I accidentally saved over my only save of the story with an American game I've been playing for fun. Now my progress for said story is lost.:wallbash::hammer2::thumbsdown::shake::cry:

(For those who were wondering, I don't know why I didn't make a backup copy. Maybe the fact that this was the first time I've ever committed this blunder has something to do with it.)

But fear not! As this is the only story I have done which has had a reasonable degree of success, I will start over. I'm going to play as Japan again, and I'll play until the German spawn date, and then give you all a recap of the new history when said date comes. It'll be similar to my first update, but at the date the Germans arrived. I apologize for this (I've really got to be more careful where I click), but the story will be back (though changed) soon!

don't you have some autosaves?

you know when you load a save, what you do is you click on the single folder on the left side of the thing and then click auto, and it shows you your last 5 autosaves

Ah-ha! Thank you, good sir, thank you! :D I found what you were talking about. Funny, I've never in my life seen that before.

Now that Moai has saved this story, I am now going to make about a half-dozen back up saves. :D Also, forget the post about starting a new story, I'll just continue this one. Note though, that I'm backtracking a few turns, from just after the French spawn. I'll pick the story up from there.

yay! i saved teh story! now! time to mod rfc doc to enable the stability cheat and make my new story not die.... i mean legitimately fix my stability :mischief:

Su-su-su-subscribed! Also, if you can you should do this with some rfc mods.

Like I said before, I'm a fan of original stuff, and RFC is no exception (Which is odd, considering I like RFC more than original Civ 4. I guess RFC is just that good :D). And besides, I have enough computer troubles with the in-game mods. Adding other ones to it? I think my computer would make me cry.

And we are back!

When we last left off, the Brits and Germans spawned, and we met a Roman ship in Indonesia. However, I got very  when I accidentally overwrote my save with another game I've been playing lately. Then Moai decided to be a hero and informed me how to save my game via autosave. However, my newest autosave was just after the French spawned, so we're doing the last update over again from turn 168.

Time to catch up...

No pictures for stuff that happened in the last update, btw.

On turn 168, we resettle Sapporo in Hokkaido, and like before, the French have taken Lyon (Lugdunum) from the Romans. Meanwhile, that barb stack is alive again, but is still heading for Greece (who tore them to shreds last time).

Turn 169: The French resettle Bordeaux, while the barbs again lose all but two units taking down a lone Greek Phalanx.

Turn 170: I again meet Rome in Indonesia, and the Romans refound Spalatum. Meanwhile, the barbs lose an axeman to a Greek, scout!?

Turn 171: Here's where things get different. Somehow, I meet Greece. Turns out they also have a ship in Indonesia:

Turn 172: The Indians refound Cochin.

Turn 173: My game crashes. When I restart, the Babylonians refounded Khalpe.

Turn 174: The British are back, settling their capital, London, again.

Turn 175: My game crashes again. [pissed] What is wrong with this thing!? When I restart, the Brits flipped Inverness. Also, the Mayans refound Chicken Pizza.

Turn 176: The Germans spawn, and found their capital Berlin. Also, the Persians again found Artacoana.

All right, now that we've finally gotten back to where we were before, I'll end this update now. Yes, it was boring, but I just wanted to get this one out of the way. But with the game crashing on me twice, this might have been the most annoying update yet. But whatever, I've got it out of the way, and I promise that next time, I'll have something new to share with you all. Later!

don't worry, rfc:doc crashed on me like 4 times today

It's weird. I'm sure I have mentioned the autosaving for each turn way before but since people rarely listens to mah rants here...I mean...my lovable comments...lol

There are no surprises the game crashes that often and that early. Either your computer is too weak or simply playing and pushing the next turn buttom while being on debugger mode will put more strains on the game.

Since the debugger shows the information that is supposed to be hidden. Either units, map layout, etc.

you can autosave every turn? my game auto saves every 3 to 4 turns!

Wow! Fast reply, man! Yes, you can change your autosaves frequency.

Personally, in a DoC game (or PAE late game), I manually save each turn at the beginning and the end to ensure I won't have to redo the turn. HoF (Hall Of Fame) games made me learnt that...in the hard way.

To change the autosaves frequency, again, it's in the Civ4 ini file in your Document/..../BTS file.

And welcome back!

I've got a special treat for you all today. As this is my 100th post on this forum, I'm going to celebrate with an update! Let's just hope my game doesn't crash five times while I'm doing this. *knocks on wood*

All right, when we last left off, I had to redo the last update due to me accidentally saving over my only save, then using an autosave to get it back. Now that we're back on track, time marches on again...

Turn 177: The British have founded their third city, Manchester, in the center of the British Isles:

I wonder how they will fill the rest of Britain and Ireland.

Turn 178: Россия! Russia!
qx0v.png

This doesn't look good for Greece. Maybe they should have settled somewhere other than the Ukraine.

Turn 179: Game crashed again. This is getting really bad. I really don't want to restart the game twenty times just to make one update. Anyway, the Brits found Exeter:

And, predictably, the Russians flip both Tiraspol and Tanais:

Because Greece just lost half of their nation to Russia, their stability has dropped from Stable to Unstable in a single turn. Ouch. And yes, the Russians did get a free Phalanx, though only one.

Turn 180: The Russians settle Tver:

I noticed that Russia, because they flipped two cities for free, that's two cities that don't have to be made via settler. That means they can grow larger quicker. They just spawned and they already can get six cities, more than any other European nation.

Turn 181: Oh, man!
59p3.png

 Greece has already collapsed! Holy crap. Just three turns ago, Greece had four cities, was stable, and was doing well. Three turns later, and they are gone! That may be the most spectacular collapse I've ever seen Greece have. Poor Pericles.

Meanwhile, the Russians have settled Saratov, west of Moskva:

:hmm: Don't think I've ever seen Russia settle there before.

Also, the Germans have founded Riga, in modern-day Lithuania:

Turn 182: Guess who's back? The Barbs!
hfrk.png

Currently there are six cities in Africa. Two are held by the barbs (Niwt-Rst and Sabratha), two are held by the Independents (Djanet and Aksum) and the remaining two (Qart-Hadasht and Hippo) are Carthaginian.

Also, the Indians have settled Takshashila to the northwest of Delhi:

Turn 183: The Germans settle Hamburg, though a little farther away from (future) Amsterdam than usual.
6org.png

You can see the Dutch spawning to the left. They'll found Amsterdam next turn.

Turn 184: Told you!
r58t.png

Because Hamburg is farther away than usual, at least the Dutch have a little bit of breathing room in this one.

Now that all of the European civilizations have spawned (except Portugal), it's time to end it here. Before we go, however, it's time to take a look at the foreign situation:
sdup.png

So the Babylonians and Persians have finished their second name-calling war, but the English and Vikings have begun their own war. Meanwhile, the Punic Wars continue on, as boringly as ever.

So that's it for this update. With all of the European civs except Portugal now here, we'll (hopefully) see the Mali arrive. Plus, we'll see if Carthage can survive the latest barbarian invasion. Stay tuned!

the barbs shall capture carthage today, tomorrow the world!

third rome vs. first rome to control the core of second rome? :crazyeye:
