1. Content on Webpages need to be loaded somewhere (your RAM)
2. Firefox has memory leak issues which cause it to use 1 GB+ of RAM if left unclosed and used for awhile.
My copy of Firefox is currently taking 800MB after being open for 2 weeks. Chrome and Safari are sitting at similar amounts after being open the same length.
Might be spyware. My Firefox used to use over 1,000,000K, now it's less than 500,000K after I got a bunch of crap (including two different versions of Rootkit supposedly) removed.
