Internet Explorer 6: New window closes first one

Whenever I open a new window in IE 6, it will close the original window for no apparent reason. It started doing this after I uninstalled IE 7 beta. Now, I do have Norton Internet Security, but I had it long before this started happening. I've stumped the guys on two other forums. What can I do to solve it?

FYI, I have FireFox. I'm making this post with it now. However, when I'm doing updates, I sometimes need IE because it won't let you view the page otherwise. Oh, sure, I have the IE Tab plugin, but that only works for one page, then it reverts to Firefox.

So IE has its uses yet. Any ideas on how to fix it?

This site has some information about that.

Right. Make them download a completely new browser. Padma can only use IE at work. Maybe CivFan91 is at work too, or at some place where he CAN'T GET FIREFOX. I'd also like to add that you almost tabs in FF suck unless I get Tabbrowser Extensions, where they are clunky (for instance, if i open a page from a link, the tabs change color, and I can't figure out how to remove that color; why that option is even there is beyond me).

Actually, it is my home PC. However, I still use IE to update my computer and whatnot. Some pages require IE to view. Visual Studio won't work without IE 6. Sometimes I need to see multiple pages for one reason or another, like if I'm testing a web page or two that I designed. Having the first one close is an extreme annoyance.

Also, there's the engineer in me that has to have everything working properly. :D

He is 15, and his occupation says "Student", so I don't think he is at work. He is most likely not at school either, or he would use a different computer. I never said he has to download FF - I just implied it was an alternative if he needed a browser that wouldn't do what he is saying it does. So...based on my knowledge at the time (I didn't know he had FF), I gave a suggestion to workaround it. So far, you haven't done that.

PS: I don't get the tab sentence...tabs don't change colors for me. The only time there is color is when you mouse over it, and even then it is only minor.

My only suggestion to you, CivFan, is to either try more forums (particularly IE/browser/computer-oriented ones), a newsgroup, or a Google search.

You didn't even suggest an actual tech support site, just pointed him to an alternative. What if I had a problem with my comp? Would you tell me to get a new comp to work around it? Reasonably, probably not. My point is that I was annoyed that an alternative product was suggested before trying to help with the problem at hand.

As for tabs, I made an example. I clicked on a link in my email - this is what pops up -

I have a different skin downloaded. I like the Modern Pinball look. It's very different, very easy to see the difference between the browsers.

And along the lines of Ginger_Ale's advice, I'd start with this one:

http://support.microsoft.com/ie6

I've looked there a dozen times. I'll look again, but I've already stumped guys on the ComputerHope forums, and a few others. They don't have a clue.

Well, I didn't see you try to help him either, instead you chose to just tell me how bad my advice was. Since my suggestion was so bad, what do you think he should do?

Regarding tabs, here's what I see (and although I don't use the standard skin, they work even with that -- the one on the left is a moused-over one). I won't give advice on how to solve your solution for fear it will be bad.

Try this:

Tools > Options > Advanced > Browsing
Clear a tick beside "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts."
If it's clear, tick it, apply close browser. Reopen and untick, apply, close.

Second option:

Control Panel > Add/remove programs > Windows Components box.
Untick Internet Explorer and follow the prompts. If it offers an option to repair IE [I don't remember offhand], take it.
Otherwise, uninstall IE, reboot and reinstall it via the same route.

You might want to backup favorites before going this route. If it offers an option to delete user/data files, don't take it--those will be your favorites and settings which you want to keep.
_ _ _

What's probably happened is that IE7 beta didn't restore IE6 settings properly when you uninstalled it. That's why it's beta ;)

You might find something, or get an answer, at http://www.annoyances.org. You might also have something on your machine you don't want that's trying to use bandwidth and might try running HiJackThis to see if anything turns up.

HiJackThis gave me this report:
