Inventory: how many players are there?

I finished the game WITHOUT cheating, OR reloading. And that "crappy" terrian saved my butt!! I fell WAY behind in tech (near the end of the game) and the City Walls, Costal Fortresses, on Mountians and hills saved my butt!!! Even outdated units (rifleman) could stop a battleship!!!! The Great Library, and Leo's REALLY helped me in the early game!!! Then the English Nuked Rome in 2012. They never took a city but I got nuked.

Matrix: I am frantically trying to complete the game before the end of the month. The Holy Roman Empire is finally gettin' medieval on some neighbors, but the Mongols are still a very nasty threat.

I may not be able to participate next month, as (I know this may come as a surprise to most of the people around here ) there are a few things more important than civ. I may try but I doubt I will have time.

But dammit I'm going to find a way to finish February's game by Wednesday night.

In my game the Persians nuced London, Zimbabwe and Weii! In the same turn! So don't expect me to feel sorry for you

I'm starting to feel better about my miserable score. Even though it was a tough game, I finished, sans cheating. I did learn a new technique that is useful in a bad game. Either build or capture a weak city in a battle zone. Plunder it, especially the city walls, because you want it to be as weak as possible. (Also the money from the used goods sale is handy). Don't defend it, just leave and let your opponent take it. As soon as it is captured, retake it. I gained a lot of tech by doing this over and over again.

Here's the real kick in the teeth: I got nuked, lost the city, and still got charged a pollution penalty!

You know, sometimes it can be real fun playing the underdog. I've also had games where I did so bad I didn't stand a change and I only tried to survive. But indeed it's a whole different strategy. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/clown.gif" border=0>

B.t.w.: Your games are coming in now. I only need a savegame or score of CornMaster (I can't see your score, cos you already finished) and the last savegame of goodbye_mr_bond (I only have the one of 1020 AD).

(NOTE: Some spoilers in this post if you are still at the beginning!!!!)

Cornmaster is right: those mountains were handy for keeping the English from interfering too much at the beginning. Here's what else worked for me: I kept the second starting settler unit working building roads, while my capital churned out new settlers for cities. This way the mountains weren't a movement disadvantage for long, and I quickly had 4 or 5 cities. Then, I got the Great Wall as quickly as possible and started building cities toward the Zulus. When I discovered that the continent doubled around in a horseshoe shape, I built a trireme and sent a couple of settlers up there too. Once you have Great Wall, quick expansion is possible if you stay on the defensive and build a phalanx in each city. I traded a lot of science too, and eventually managed to form an alliance with the Persians (got a lot more science that way, and had one less worry at the beginning).

In a game like this, my strategy usually is: Make peace, and expand like mad. Worked well this time anyway.

By the way: GREAT idea, BigWheel!

You know I never had any trouble with the English!!! I quickly found the Zulu and put a phalanx and an Elephant on a hill to prevent them from getting close to my cities and then after some time I attacked them with a few more unites, including some diplomats. I found the Mongol's home island just before the Zulu's where wiped out and after they had been crushed the English where next - But the English never came to my island!!!

The English also didn't attack me on my continent. However, I didn't attack them as well, which was a very bad decision (or indicision to be exact).
