Iran touts new missile's long range

Hubris or hybris (Greek ὕβρις), according to its modern usage, is exaggerated self pride or self-confidence (overbearing pride), often resulting in fatal retribution. In Ancient Greece, "hubris" referred to actions taken in order to shame the victim, thereby making oneself seem superior.

ex·ag·ger·at·ed /ɪgˈzædʒəˌreɪtɪd/ – adjective

1. unduly or unrealistically magnified: to have an exaggerated opinion of oneself.
2. abnormally increased or enlarged.

Yadda yadda yadda.

Could they use this as a delivery vehicle for chemical weapons?

I suppose, but I imagine any of their missiles, including the ones that could already hit US bases and Isreal, can already do this.

The question is, what does this missile add to their capabilities other than having a marginally longer range?

Well surely even that is some detterent? If Saudi cities now fall within range of a potential chemical-wepaon armed missile dont you think that would act as some deterrent?

This is a feel good weapon to project an image of national strength to the Iranian people, and thereby attempting to boost support for the current government.

Let's be honest, are there any weapons that are not "feel good"? Personally, I adore them all. The ones that make big explosions have a special place in my heart.

Am I getting through here?

Saudi cities were already within the range of their missiles. I am afraid what this comes down to is media exaggeration and Iranian propoganda. The media yells "OMFG US BASES IN RANGE OF THIS MISSLE" without also mentioning that those bases were already in range so everyone thinks it is something special. Iran shouts "WE HAVE THS SAAAWWWEAT NEW TOY" and the arm chair generals (voters) fret over this revolutionary missile that...ummm...goes farther?

So yes, while a capability increase, it is not anything that will add deterrent to whatever capabilities are alreay deterring us for now.

OK, maybe as a direct military deterrent, this aint much. I still think an increased capability to attack Europe will make the US, less likely, however little less, to attack Iran though.

Oh, they're defending themselves. So... the U.S. is now 1,200 miles away, and not say... Israel?

They're getting there one mile at a time...

They're getting there one mile at a time...

is that including the speed of continental drift?

5.) Its an area weapon. Unless Iran launched a network of global navigation satelites that we don't know about, has imaging satelites or has been violating the airspace of ever nation around it with spy planes to get ara mapping data, or developed inertial guidance to rival everything Russia, the US, China, or ever European country has ever produced it is not going to be an accurate weapon.

They just need google earth and a 20$ GPS receiver

Guys, keep in mind that this is the nation that says they developed a stealth flying boat. I don't think you should take their statements regarding their military prowess as Gospel. ;)

Flaunting military power is something done by everybody, and as Elrohir said it's more often than not propaganda.

I don't see why it's a surprise or a scandal that Iran is doing it.

"Dude! The US could own you guys in, like, 15 minutes! 'Cause we gots all the newest stuff."

"Well we'd still hit your base with our sooper de dooper missile and bomb your ships with our flying stealth boat of death!"

"Well....then we'd nuke you!"

"Not if we nuke you first!"

"Aha! See France? They do want to nuke us!"

"Do not!"

"Do to!"

Meh the CEP could be max what...100-300 meters. Considering they buy armament from the Russians I'd say that the CEP of the missile is 'bout 100m. Good enough for a military base.

1,200 miles? HA! Pwned!
