Iraq

Islamic state of Iraq: Suggests there is no room for Christians or Atheists, which could represent difficulty for Iraqis who had previously enjoyed a fair amount of freedom in religious practice.

No they did not have freedom of religion. Christianity was not allowed, it had to be done through the underground.

Where did you hear that? wasnt one of Saddams ministers Christian. That albino-type one, dont remember his name or function.

Seriously, SSG Paul, who told you that? Not only is Tareq Aziz a Christian, Saddam donated quite a big sum to the Chaldaean community in Detroit...

Sorry, you miss a move for believing the propaganda.

:)

Hmmmm, that's wierd. I work for a religious organization (though I am an atheist). We had a muslim Iraqi who converted to lutheran give a speech at my work. He said all non-muslim teachings are done through underground churches. This was like in 2002, but I'm prepared to stand corrected since it's five of you against one of me.

There was pressure from conservative communities and family members that drove some individuals to keep their faith secret. Perhaps that is what he was referring to?

Actually, splitting up Iraq is not a bd idea. It is a typical ((post)-colonial?) dream to think people with different culture/religion/background/descent should be forced to live peacefully in one country.

Didn't work in India, not in Yugoslavia, and also not really that well in Belgium.

New Texas......
India was better off just being seperate states (Punjab, UP, Bihar etc.) and not divided on religious basis. Ofcourse that didn't suit the Brits.

Calling us Brits is derogatory and just like calling Pakistanis, Pakis or calling the Japanese, Nips. We have a proper name - we are British! Silly Yank ;)

I read that when the British left, they awarded independence to each of the smaller states on Indian sub-continent. Those states then swallowed each other (through threats, corruption, coercion or war) which resulted in just two large nations and one disputed territory (which wants to remain independent).

Mess o potamia

When I was in college, diversity was the flavor of the month. Everybody should be meeting other cultures and learning about them so that the different cultures wouldn't start shooting at each other. Kind of a chocolate-vanilla swirl ice cream.

Now it seems to be Neapolitan, where each of the three flavors of ice cream in the box are neatly separated from one another.

Leave it as Iraq and keep the borders as they are.

It will end in a bloody mess.

Just for the record Tariq Aziz is indeed Christian and was the Deputy Prime-Minister of Iraq which made him the second most important man in the government after Saddam himself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tariq_Aziz

It's highly unlikely Christians will do anywhere near as well for themselves in Iraq now. Hussein was a despicable tyrant but he was secular which is why people like Bin Laden hated his guts.

Well, after Iran gets nukes and invades and drives the US out, the two can merge and form the nation of Persia, and then go up like a Roman candle after Shrub nukes it anyway.

Well, that might be true, but we can't really tell, can we?

you have no faith in the american armed forces, do you?

i dont get it, why are right wing americans so scared?
you have the worlds mighties army, a fact you all mention alot too, yet you all are a paranoid bunch, why?

Everybody's paranoid. Non-Americans are paranoid that the U.S. is just getting started on an international shooting spree, for example. They're all like "crap, Iran's gonna get it next", for example.
