Judge: Keep Potter Books in School

The adventures of boy wizard Harry Potter can stay in Gwinnett County school libraries, despite a mother's objections, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Laura Mallory, who argued the popular fiction series is an attempt to indoctrinate children in witchcraft, said she still wants the best-selling books removed and may take her case to federal court.

Anyone feeling a bit of cognitive dissonance here?

Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

"I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again," Mallory said. "I think we need him."

Nice find. This reminds me of how so many evangelical groups are calling mormonism rediculous because of it's absurd disortion of scientific facts, but they ignore their own religion which does this same thing.

A) Religious books are allowed in most school libraries.
B) Harry Potter is not remotely religious, except that it has some Christian flavor (very subtle, but detectable). She has most likely not read the books.
C) Even if this were true, allowing people to have access to religious books is acceptable, so long as they do not actively teach it as a "good" path.

And even if Harry Potter were "religious" why would it matter? Why shouldn't a school library have religious books?

I have an exgirlfriend who is a Harry Potter fundamentalist and dabbled in witchcraft... and thinks I'm stalking her and that dating on the internet is a good idea. Why care if people do "witchcraft", it doesn't do anything. If it did, I would have been killed by her a long time ago.

Yeah this took place in my county; its been an issue for several years now. Ms. Mallory is on the majority opinion.

I found it funny though, when she said schools try to "indocrinate" children with witchcraft followed by a: "I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again"

My school didn't ban books. We had a bible, koran, harry potter 1, The Jewish book, whatever buhdists and hindus read, and a anti banning book poster.
