Is it dishonourable to restart a game?

But nothing has a tundra bias in VP, and starts are independent of being a human player or not, nor difficulty.

Just in case it wasn't clear from my description, I don't think there is any dishonour is playing the game however you like! It's a game, after all! If you're enjoying yourself that's already a win! ;)

I don't reroll, I try to make every start work. This does lead into more games I end up quitting earlier, but in general re-loading saves doesn't feel 'right' to me.

Learn from my mistakes, and next time fortify that city close to that 'peaceful' Byzantine a bit better...

Granted, on that notion I just dropped back to King from Emperor, because the AI tends to trounce me on Emperor now too much.

If my information is correct that's true. Many times I see my capital better in terrain than the enemy's on deity.

No civ in VP has a tundra bias. I don't see any notes in the start bias logic distinguishing between human or AI players. I think it doesn't have any internal logic to assess what a "good" start would be, thus no way to give a bad one to a specific player.

It does have internal logic to evaluate start positions.

Settler, Chieftain and Warlord players get first pick of settling locations over the AI. Otherwise civs are placed on the map in a random order. The AI is not given an advantage - I considered it, but thought it wouldn't be fun.

StartingLocPercent doesn't necessarily give the higher priority civ a better start - it just ensures a higher fertility and more likely to follow the civ's start bias.

CvStartPositioner.cpp in the DLL.

oh the ai isn't given an advantage in startloc. huh I was my mistaken then, so 50% starting locpercent https://civ-5-cbp.fandom.com/wiki/AI_and_Difficulty means its random i see. not sure how that works. does it roll through the list of civs and do the coin flip?
and i thought some civs were tundra bias hmm https://civ-5-cbp.fandom.com/wiki/Civilizations i guess just the no starting bias in general feels really bad to me.

Yeah, it does. Not sure about start biases, but the wiki is out of date on a lot of things.

Because it takes me so long to startup => mod load => game load, I do not re-roll. When I do need to make an "adjustment", though, I do not hesitate to use IGE; unit stuck in single hex due to war ending, no strategic resources to be found, etc.I even like playing raging barbs with an extra pathfinder to start sometimes.

Honorable? You bet - it's my game, and on marathon/huge, potentially my weekend(s)!

The StartingLocPercent value which determines start position order can be modified in DifficultyMod.xml - forgot to make that clear. :)

You can set it to 40 or something so that you always get first pick over the AI - may reduce rerolls.
