Is it realistic to get Petra on immortal?

Eh, I do not think I'm "good enough" to execute that plan- the barbarians would stomp all over me  Must be why I so rarely get Petra! Almost the opposite of what I normally do, which is to squeeze the first library in as quickly as possible, along with the first caravans.

It seems like every time I try to build Petra or the GL, an AI completes it on the "same turn" and gets the wonder. This has happened several times in a row with various different wonders. So I gave up on wonder-based strats and now I focus on economic expansion prior to military dominance.

Only been able to get in immortal games where the AI has no desert cities so far

if you want a reasonably certain chance of getting it, you need to focus on monuments in the early bit, get them asap on every city you settle, put all your policies in liberty, you should complete the tree before you get to economics or whichever the Petra tech is, grab an engineer from completing liberty and rush Petra. At least that's how I managed it in my immortal Morocco game, and there were 4 other civs in just the desert I started in, so it's not as though they left it to me.

Depends on the desert. Mining luxes and quarries near the site or settle hill - you're good to go. Cotton and Incense desert is no good.

Don't sell/trade embassies with AI who might want to build Petra because if they see you trying they will prioritize it and finish it first.

On Deity, Petra gets built somewhere around turns 65-75 if there's not a desert-based civ. If you see one of those earlier (especially Arabia, who usually beelines Currency for the Bazaar) you might see it as early as turn 55ish.

I can consistently get Petra whenever I can build it before those turn #s.

I think early Writing, one lux tech, mining and then straight to currency. On immortal, I always got it when I tried but it might have been luck.

I frequently make 3 trade routes hammer movers to help wonder rushing so that helps a lot with later wonders since I don't think the AI does this but the petra is to early for that to help so I feel like I'm rolling dice.

In my capital, on Immortal I'm 3/3 so far. Could have just been luck, but it feels pretty easy. One game had Arabia and another had BOTH Arabia and Morocco... so they at least had the opportunity. (Yes, I have no idea how I keep getting desert starts with no priority and no re-rolls).

In my second city, I'm 0/1 (but it was close! and I bought that settler too, so it was slow; I think it can be done if you go liberty or build a super-early settler).

last game, i got great engineer, then rush built petra, but, the AI strikes first! what a shame

I was one turn behind the AI on Petra on Immortal. They had it turn 68ish, I would have finished on the 69th I think it was.

If I have a good desert start, i gun for petra. Usually I can manage GL+gardens before petra, though if I dont GL, I can still manage stonehenge+ HG before petra. On diety, tradition +15% wonder prod, and usually marble in first or 2nd city. If no marble, I chop forests to get gardens/petra complete asap. getting currency reasonably early is key.

I get Petra 10 out of 10 times on immortal.

You have to actively decide to get it from turn 1 and adjust your tech path to beeline it soon enough.

The AI's Petra building habits are extremely annoying. How many times do we need to see Petra built in a two desert tile (flat desert) city? Even when I don't want to build Petra, this sort of nonsense in infuriating.

I rather they do that instead of spending it on a worthwhile wonder if they only have 2 tiles that can use it.

On my last immortal game as Venice, I got great lighthouse --> hanging gardens --> Petra (but only just barely)

On Immortal, I shy away from wonders unless I get a marble start when I will then automatically go for Tradition, so I can get the double wonder bonus. It's doable if you have a good production start.

Pretty much same here. Forget about Wonders on Imm\Dt, unless they are National.

if I see "Desert Folklore" taken by someone, you can forget about Petra. :( It's most likely Arabia or Morocco in the game.

You could just use Casimir + Liberty tree to get Petra. It usually doesn't get made until T90-100ish.

And speaking of other wonders, it is remarkably doable to get Hanging gardens. Although sometimes it get made at T55.... but on the off chance your random civs didn't pick Tradition over Piety, I usually get it made around T70 no problem.
