Is music getting better?

Well... I'm born in 1981 and my favourite music is from the end of the 60's/beginning of the 70's. That doesn't mean that I don't like some of today's songs, simply that it's not my favourite music. Hence, I don't personally believe that music is getting better with time, but I understand some may think so. It's only a matter of taste.

The only thing I wouldn't agree with is people dismissing older music as necessarily "not as cool" as today's, and not being enough open-minded to listen to it. There are musics from the 18th century that are so moving that it can make cry any kind of people who would really let the music getting into them.

For example the biggest stars from 1991-1997 were Nirvana, Sublime, 2pac, The Notorious B.I.G. The biggest stars from 1998-Present are Eminem, 50 Cent, and Slipknot.

The people who say this sort of thing tend to forget that Snow had his day in the sun, too.

Must be a Canadian thing eh?

Gnarles Barkely is on the radio constantly... I thought he WAS top 40.

I guess there is good stuff getting out.

I agree with the idea that only the better music gets through the filter of history. Andy Gibb wasn't too bad, I guess.

Well, the majority of my music is older than I am.

I won't complain, however, that music is getting worse. Like what has been previously said, the McMusic gets washed away, but the classics remain. Its just that today's McMusic hasn't been washed away yet.

And if you're looking at the charts to find good music, you're looking in the wrong spot. The best music is music you discover yourself.

on the pop scene, i think it's getting worse, purely because nearly all the near "talent" is just regurgitating old music, and making it a bit more modern by adding some "a'itood".

I tend to agree with Bob ....

Bob Dylan says modern music is worthless
Tue Aug 22, 2006 11:21am ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Bob Dylan says modern recordings sound "atrocious," and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.

"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past twenty years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

Dylan, who released eight studio albums in that time, returns with his first recording in five years, "Modern Times," next Tuesday.

Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway."

"You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static."

Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle.

"Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it."

Well, going by that, it doesn't sound like Bob really likes music anymore.

I think music is getting better, but it's also getting harder to find decent music. The whole industry has become totally saturated with absolute crap, so it's harder to actually find the stuff you like.

I think a lot of the recording methods have gotten a lot better. I listen to a lot of metal, and its definately recorded better now than it was in the 80's. Loads of nu-metal bands play absolutely shite music, but their guitars tone's often sound a lot better than far superior older bands, just because of the advancments in recording techniques.

It is true that the playback media is getting worse and the McMusic is trending toward filling the available bandwidth with as much noise as possible to stand out. Compressed digital music, no dynamic range, all sounding the same in the background... It's not really attitude, just noise.

The live versions almost always sound better, though, and the better quality playback media is pretty hard to find, and ain't cheap. There is good music out there. Hear it live and see whether you like it.

I agree with that :goodjob:

Same here. :goodjob:

The only time I really listen to music is when I'm writing, and that's just inspiring movie soundtracks.

Davo says Bob Dylan is worthless
Wed Aug 23, 2006 14:20pm BST

OFF TOPIC (Civ Forums) -Davo says that Bob Dylans recordings sound 'worthless' and the songs on his new album never sounded any good in the first place and he doesn't know why Bob even bothered going into the studio let alone putting them onto disc.

"Bob hasn't made a record that sounds decent in the past twenty years, really," the 21-year-old Civ Player said in an interview with Civ Fanatics.

Davo, whose releassed bugger all in that time wasn't even alive for some of it.

Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well thats what you get when record companies rip artists off even more than they rip customers off''

"You listen to these modern records, some of them are really great, they really rule'' he added. ''Bob Dylan is just old and bitter and past it"

Davo said he does his best to fight Dylan, and it's a winning battle.

''Bob sounded ten times better many years ago. CDs are cool. Yeah."

Amen. Old bag of wind, that man.

on the whole, things are slighty improving from the 80`s and 90`s.
gah... the nineties just plain sucked. in general terms.
hate rap. dislike r&b. a new rap/r&b song comes out, and there is nothing
new in the lyrics, and nothing new in the instrumentals. its stagnating, i think.

I think Dylan was raging against CDs and mp3s, not music in general.

He likes him some records.

yeah, everyone knows that quality wise vinyl>cds and other digital media

unfortunately cds are more convenient so i'll go with them.

imagine a record player in your car. or worse, on you're belt

Jesus, this thread is a joke. MUSIC IS NOT GETTING BETTER. IT IS GETTING WORSE BY THE DAY.

Come on. That's like saying theater is getting worse, cinema is getting worse or tv is getting worse. It's not that's it bad, it that there's more of it.

There's more music. A lot more. So of course a lot, and I do mean a lot of it is useless FM fillers. But if you make a very small effort you'll find really great and imaginative stuff. You can't judge music by only looking at what's in the Billboard chart or the top something.

About Dylan's rant: It's funny to see the guy who was booed for playing electric guitar rip on the "new technology" involved in albums these days.
The times they are a-changin'.
