Is music getting better?

Music has been going downhill since the Nineties except for a few good bands. (Franz Ferdinand, Outkast, Gnarls Barkley, and Jet.)

As long as there are people doing something new, music is good. I'm not crazy about Dangermouse, but at least he's offering something fresh. And Christina Aguilera is getting away from the pop princess paradigm by tapping DJ Premiere as a producer.

Sure, yeah, I'll say music is getting better.

No.

I find a lot fewer songs that i like per year.
The incredible thing is the potential that it has nowadays. Talent is what's missing.

 Right on the money!!

There's always something good being made, and something worst getting played. Fing your music in places other than crappy radio stations and MTV and you'll find gems everyday. I'm rocking out to Be your Own Pet these days and I'm lovin' it! :goodjob: Who knew Nashville could produce something good? ;)

Music seems to be getting worse because the McMusic (great term Bozo) gets lost in the wash and the classics stay with us.

Having said that the charts did used to have some good music but are now full of total dross aimed at the pre-pubesent market. Got so bad Top of the Pops has gone off the air after forty odd years. There is a lot of good music out there, but the charts are McMusic.

Christina Aguilera and DJ Premier? Wow. I might actually have to buy whatever album that song is on, seeing as DJ Premier is only the motherfreaking MAN!:D

As for the OP, Outkast is amazing. Their 90's work is still as amazing as it's always been. Christina Aguilera is a talented singer with a helluva voice, but she tends to make crap records. I don't even know who gnarls barkley is, so no comment.

I think that as with any era, music is good and bad. With mainstream and underground music, you have good and bad. I think some aspects of today's music are quite odious, such as the butchering of Hip Hop via the neverending bullfeathers of 50 cent and his ilk, but then you have artists like Common who are as true to Hip Hop as one would be to his wife.

Nowadays, there isn't much Jazz, Reggae or other such music that suits my fancy. Most all the good Reggae and Jazz that I listen to is quite old. For example, name a jazz artist today that can hold a candle to John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck? Name a reggae artist that can hold a candle to Bob Marley or Peter Tosh? I sure as hell can't think of any.

hey

we arent all country shite ;)

oh, and everyone. go listen to saul williams. he isnt popular but he's anti pop-rap. and he's a poet.

Popular music is getting worse in the sense that it's all repetitive and formulaic c^%4p.

On the other hand, more and more great music is being produced, but most of it is underground and hard to find.

The stuff that sells is rarely good.

!!

Well said!

The great thing with music is that you're never to old to find stuff that great, be it current or from 60 years ago.

For instance, new additions to my library have been Hank Williams Sr., Buffalo Springfield, Dirty Pretty Things, Be Your Own Pet, Brothers & Sisters, and Jenny Lewis.

All wonderful, some brand spanking new, some covered in dust. :)

wow.

thats 2 mentions of BYOP

i used to go to school with some of those kids.

and my friend nichole is best friends with em still.

Music has been the same, always people hating it, always people loving it. You're all just getting old. :p

Trick is to find modern bands that you love, that give you an appreciation of what good music is and to keep faith. Currently some of my favourites include David Gray, Tom Mcrae, KT Tunstall - even Oasis still surprise me with a couple of songs. And that's in addition to my standard 'tried and tested' bands that are Pink Floyd, Queen, Fleetwood Mac.

Try looking into local bands as well. Most might be terrible, but I was pleasantly surprised by a couple from here.

Anybody who thinks present-day music is bad just doesn't listen to it enough.

I'd say there is a lot of good stuff out there that needs to be listened too. Gnarls Barkley was a good mention, it consists of a good pop singer combining with a great producer/DJ(Danger Mouse), and probably put out the best pop album this year. Matisyahu is a good new personality with a fresh view on a lot of things. The Arcade Fire and Stars were mentioned too.

If you retain an open mind, music will always be getting better.

I won't say music is getting worse, but the number of new groups coming out which impress me are getting to be fewer and fewer. Of course, the variation between artists seems to be narrowing as well.

The numebr of artists with real staying power also seems to be dwindling.

well. id rather listen to music than get fat :smug:

to each his own i guess

what about music videos?

EDIT: and also, i think the reason people think music is getting worse is because people only remember the good music from the past. so when they think of those times they associate it with good music. and now they see bad music and how much they see now versus how much good music they remember and assume its getting worse.

i think there's a constant ratio of good vs. bad.

Television is only good for HBO and sports, of which there are few sports I like to watch.

I don't know about rap or r&b but I think rock is getting worse.
Almost all the bands today are playing songs about how sad they are,
and please stop the emo fad.
