Nobles' Club 328: Elizabeth of England

Immortal T179

Spoiler :

Got to Astro in 540 AD with 7 cities (4 from my early save + 3 inland along rivers). Used 4 great people on the way to Astro (1 GS for Academy, capital GP for Golden Age, 2 GS to bulb Astro). After that, settled more around the coast for trade routes while researching Currency->CS->Paper->Edu->(trading for Philo)->Printing Press.

I noticed my research pace is still quite a bit lower than @soundjata's T174 deity save. That might reflect the stronger long-term bureau capital from settling 1S. I noticed @soundjata's game also has a bit more cities packed in the mainland and of course every city is profitable after Astro.

Since it's Immortal and I could afford just relaxing with that land I decided to go for a space victory, so I used Lib for Sci.Method. Capital is ready to start building Oxford. I was going to switch to Caste / Free Religion, but for the same 2 turns of Anarchy I can add in State Property, so waiting for Communism to finish. Rep would also be very good once I add the specialists from Caste, but the tech detour for Nationalism->Constitution didn't seem justified so far.

About the map edits. Map spoiler obviously.
Spoiler :

"...the area near your start was made slightly beefier"

Did you mean to turn the nearby pig into cow?

Spoiler :
I think if I was going to make an Animal Husbandry resource "beefier" I'd probably swap it with an Agriculture resource, but I'm not sure. I don't remember specifically what was edited on this map.

Sorry for bumping an old thread.
Gave it a serious try on Deity, but somehow ended up with a quite late Astronomy date (940AD). Even Monarchy was probably late even though I thought I was doing alright. At least I properly defended against barbs & prevented galley spawn...
I suppose I should have gone Sailing + Alphabet before Monarchy, so I could build research in the nothern cities, instead of focusing so much on GP + warriors... Also maybe stay with 5 cities until Optics.
Any advice is appreciated, if someone has time to look at the saves...
II guess I'll try to play the map through the end at least.

The first thing that stands out to me is how spread out your cities are. London has no satellites to help grow cottages, in fact your entire empire has a grand total of four shared tiles, only one of which seems improved. Settling cities closer together to share/work cottages, reduce distance to the palace maintenance cost and be able to move units around in response to barbarians faster is crucial on Deity.

Henrik actually talked about that in his YT playthrough of this map, so check that out for both how that approach plays out and why it's good to use (don't recall the exact video/timestamp he mentions the tile sharing stuff, unfortunately).

Start: Moved settler 1S to make sure I wasn't giving up anything before SIP or plains hill if south has no good resources.

Played to about T60 on diety.

Still getting used to the barb spawns. Had spear charging for my capital but was lucky to have researched archery before BW. I went Agri-Wheel-Pottery-AH-Hunting-Archery-BW. I finished AH just as capital was reaching size 5 so I could build size 5 settler and still work 2-3 cottages. Settler definitely came later than I expected because of need to build units to defend. Didn't help that I lost a few 75%+ fights in the forests early.

After writing going to turn down slider and focus on expansion and exploring more land. I was thinking something funky like IW, bulb Math, Calendar, then beeline optics/astronomy. But don't think calendar is worth it if sugar is the only happy resource. Ugh isolation, always the tough questions. When do you get Alpha? Bulb it? Monarchy before starting Optics path?

700 AD immortal:

Restarted this map on immortal at 60 turns as I wanted to practice isolation and worry little less about barbs. Went same tech order, but more warriors and better scouting led to find nice second city with wheat/horse. After writing (maybe should have delayed writing tbh), I went for monarchy, alpha, math, sailing, calendar. Math was most useful after alpha. I stayed on 5 cities and only plan to expand to sugar and jungle after Astronomy. Only got 2 GS out (hmm, need to rethink why that is). So bulbed optics and half of astronomy.

475 AD optics and 700 AD astronomy seems not great. But I'm pretty happy with how I played and kept growing economy and cities. Built a ton of warriors and axes so capital is size 12 now, and other cities are around size 10.

Plan now is trade for currency from Wang Kon, self tech CoL, CC, Paper. Bulb Education, bulb PP, self tech Philosophy and Lib. Take scientific method with lib, then beeline rifling. Communism asap and workshop spam. First attack is hopefully redcoats only should be doable :)

Appreciate any feedback on my city placement, tech order, and future plans.
