Is Tech Diffusion Working The Way I think It Is?

I have noticed a lack of much TechDiffusion in my AND games (and it may also apply to RoM; I don't know). I recently had a game where I was at least 4-10 techs behind the civs on my continent but I didn't experience any free tech progress at all, like I would during a game of RevolutionDCM. The Revolution.ini file says that the minimum techs behind I need to be to get any tech diffusion is 4. Now that I think of it, I can't think of any time where I definitely was receiving tech diffusion. Usually I can tell when I'm getting it because I'll get :science: in techs I haven't researched yet. Anyone know what's going on here?

I've noticed this as well, in RoM I could rely on theAI to not be too far behind me, even the tiny island bound barbarian civs, in RAND I've been taking riflemen up against crossbowmen and macemen.

Did you have embassies established? If I recall correctly I think I remember reading that you had to be friends with the nation that you want to tech diffuse with.

Tech Diffusion does not give free beakers, it reduces the prices of techs.

Was that changed from the Revolutions mod that it came from? From playing that mod I was of the impression that tech diffusion did give free beakers. (Although I could be wrong- it's hard to tell exactly what features like this are doing unless you know how to mod the game and/or have access to the debugging information. I could have also just noticed the effects of something else, but it sure looked like tech diffusion to me- maybe that was what happened in an older version or something.)

I usually have a few. Embassies weren't a feature in the Revolutions mod though, but maybe Tech Diffusion was adapted differently for this mod or Rise of Mankind. That's sort of the question I'm hoping to get an answer to. ;) (And if it was adapted differently, I'm wondering how to get my hands on any new controls to fine-tune it.)

When I played the Revolutions/RevDCM mod I had tech diffusion turned up a bit. My end goal here is basically that civs are at worst maybe most of an era behind (with the exceptions of civs you don't have contact with and New World barbarian civs, of course). I was able get what felt like an achievement of that goal in the Revolutions mod (by turning up the DiffusionMod variable in the Revolution.ini config file), but here it doesn't seem right to me after doing that. Perhaps I just need to turn it up more?

Tech diffusion with Revolution used to give free beakers. But I switched over to using the Tech diffusion from Better AI, which uses C++ instead of python, for speed reasons.

Ah, thanks, that helps a lot. :goodjob: So it was still happening- I just wasn't noticing it because I was looking for the wrong thing. I think I need to turn it up some as well, and I should eventually have it fine-tuned the way I like by adjusting Revolution.ini.

i personlly like tech diffisiuon from realism invictus. were if you have open borders with a empire you get a bonus to researching tech that they already researched.

...

That's exactly the way it works. Open borders, defensive pacts, etc. all affect tech diffusion.

from what i understand tech diffision only happens if you are behind in techs though while in RI it always happens.
