Is the seaport lacking now?

After the patch, it seems as though the seaport is fairly useless. It only provides 1 extra hammer per sea resource. Since you probably won't have more than 4 (2-3 is usual), it won't pay for itself for a long time and its costing you money.

Is there any reason to build it now?

I only build it when I have 3+ ressources and even then, it's fairly useless.

But this isn't surprising, they decreased its hammer bonus to +1 and increased the hammer costs to build it.

Yeah, strange decision in the latest patch. The harbor is made stronger and the seaport weaker, but it needed to be the other way around. The harbor should lose its production modifier and give it to the seaport.

It was one of the strangest changes in the patch. Seems to have been weak already pre-patch. Now I doubt I would ever build it.

Strange decision.

I personally like it. They actuallymade the first hammer available earlier, with harbor, so now that means seaport will take less time to build.

I think they wanted to buff the harbor to give a few hammers to coastal cities without needed a Renaissance building, but they didn't want to buff the hammers late game since they nerfed the hammer costs of almost everything late game.

Personally I'd think if it's still on the tables for changes at some point, I'd make Harbors give both bonuses but with a tech requirement for the second hammer (Navigation would probably work) and make the seaport do something else.

imho harbor should be tradenetwork and +1 hammer

but seaport should get +1 hammer and in addition the production bonus for ships.

I agree to the original post- it does seems underpowered.

I only ever build harbours if the city if approx 4-5 spaces from my existing road network. And build seaports even less :-)

The really strange thing is that the military advisor never seems to fail to recommend it -- even in cities with NO sea resources nearby. Without a sea resource, Otis entirely useless and doesn't provide any resource at all! Do you think they changed the effect but somehow did not adjust the impact on advisor recommendations? That would point to very convoluted coding logic...

Don't worry Thal will fix it. Then Firaxis will fix it.

The point was that island cities were a waste of time, production wise, until you had a sea port available. No hammers = crap production.

So shifting one to the harbour is a good thing.
And in process, making Seaport a useless building.

Well not "really", the Harbor just became much more cost efficient and the Seaport a whole lot less... but if you have a city with 2 or more resources and no good hills or land to get production there you still might want the Seaport since Base hammers are still very good (and rare).

Compare it with with something like stoneworks & you'll know why I am calling it useless.

and the answer is..... guess what... its situational! yes!

if you have lots of sea resources on say an.... island map.. then yes it can be very useful.

That seems like it's too situational. On islands, production is an issue anyway, and you still won't likely have more than 4 sea resources.

I like the fact that we can get a few hammers earlier. Sometimes you may want to build two Cities on a spindly Island connected by roads, in which case only one Harbour was required, now if you want to work the available fish, Whales and Pearls an extra harbour is needed.
