Is there any Civs that you hate starting nest too?

I use culture starts and almost always play as the Germans, so I regularly start near the same civs. The Russians are almost always a pain in the ass, so I try to conquer them as soon as possible. They tend to dominate if they survive for too long. In my latest game I started out beside the Celts and Vikings. Lots of early wars.

Zulus definitely. Shaka ALWAYS seems to try a sneak-attack. At least the Germans are up-front about declaring war.

And I agree with the other poster, I love starting next to the French.

Persians for me. It always seems they buikd tons of Immortals and try to boss me around after I discover I can't get to any of the iron.

It's amazing what nice, meek neighbors the Persians are when they don't have iron to build their Immortals.

Simple solution . Dont use culturally linked starting positions.

There is a unfixable bug about Culturally Linked Starting Position that makes all Amerindian civs appear. That means you would be stuck with Aztecs , Iroquis, Maya, Inca.

I was going to say since when does CLSP work?

I hate starting next to the Russians and I usually choose European civs, I used to get Russia all the time (Especially when I was German) but it doesn't happen any more

I don't like starting next to several civs, but especially Germany and Persia. They are bloodthirsty, and on the higher levels, start with several offensive units. When this occurs, you just build up your defense (and offense) and hope that they don't attack you before circa 1500 BC.

The Zulu and the Germans. They settle fast and declare war faster.

The worst civ to be beside IMHO is the Russians, because they always seem to expand around you, and if you're in a tight position often they can cut you off early on from settling - also, their Scientific trait means that they can become the leader in the tech race, and soon you could become one of their quasi-vassal states if you're not careful!

Another annoying civ to be near (I agree with bloodofages) is the Americans, because often they expand (just like Russia) faster than other civs and generally end up quite powerful. I find the Iroquois to be similar, and this really gets me - they end up being one of the most powerful states (above Rome, for instance, in a recent game), and this is completely unfaithful to history! I know it's about gameplay and not history, but it's still annoying!

Actually the Iroquois had an advanced political & agricultural sytem, superior in many ways to those of Europe. No reason they couldn't have grown to be a more powerful civilization. the fact that marginalized civs can become world powers in this game makes it more interesting IMHO.

Back to the question tho I dislike being next to the more agressive civs as they sometimes force a war before I want one. Especially bad if you have 2 or 3 of them nearby(as was already mentioned)

Cheers,

1.) The Russians. Annoying relentless settlers ad leaders in the tech race.
2.) The Mongols. Not much of a problem, Genghis Khan is just condescending
3.) The Persians. Powerhouses in the late game.

I hate starting next to the zulu. They're always lucky with their goody huts and seem to have an aggression level of very very high.

Mil Civs, with the exception of Celts.

Greece. Those hoplites are powerful, cheap, and resourceless. If most civs drop a city or two in land that I need, I can take them with a quick war. But if those cities are defended by hoplites, it's gonna be painfully bloody and give them a GA.

I hate starting near Russia since I ALWAYS seem to start near them in every game I play.

I really hate starting next to Aztecs just because they get pissed off easily over everything. But I get pissed off easily when I also start next to the Babylonians. Why? Just because Hammurabi is extremely rude in Diplomacy. He thinks he's the best. Aroggant @$$.......

on my last demigod game (on a pangea map with 7 guys) i started on the midle of mongolia, japan, persia and rome.. i got my ass whoped real bad. all of them declared war on me before midle ages :\
