It should have said "You have failed the quest of _______!!!" on the news thing on the top of the screen. I think that there is also a button in the event log (top left) that shows quests.
For any future reference please us the Newbie Questions thread.
The dialog box that you can bring up (via either the scroll looking button on the upper left of the screen or via Ctrl-Tab) that shows the log for the messages that scroll by in the upper center of the screen also has tabs to show other things. It also has tab that shows detailed combat results and another one that shows your current quests. If a quest is obsoleted/expired or completed it disappears from the quests tab, but you should be able to scroll back through the messages on the message tab to see when it expired (but not necessarily why, although if it happened immediately after a "You have research Whatchamacallit" message then that could be why).
Ctrl+Tab is the ticket. It'll list any current quests you have pending under the "Quests" tab. If you fail it, it won't appear in the box. If you haven't failed it yet, it'll still be there and it'll give you the completion requirements. FWIW, about 50% of quests are BS anyways, and the rest are only marginally useful....
