Is this a lost cause?

It's a standard fractal map w/ 10 opponents on... i think monarch. The initial start obviously was great but is this even enough land to win? If it is, what would your city placement look like?

That's a horrible start. I would reroll that. A fourth of your island is desert, so you're not gonna have many places to settle.

Assuming that yellow stuff is desert looks like a tough ask. Capital looks nice although crabs make a slow growth capital. At least 3-5 cities there really. Would be nice to see the actual save.

For me I might reroll.

Ouch, this start reminds me a little of the recent LHC with Charlgy - too much desert and hardly any resources. I can definately see locations for 4 decent and 2 pretty bad cities, but for me, there are simply too few resources. A lack of happiness also means you'll need to tech monarchy early and spam warriors. Horses or Metal could rescue it, but if it were me I'd reroll

I can't tell from the screenshot if you have access to other lands. If not I would look to lightbulb my way to Astro as soon as possible and take some from the other Ai.

Wonders, I would go for the GLh and Mids with most of my research coming from rep scientists. Also hope to pop a GE from the mids to use on Machinery.

Also like to see the save, and try a game from it.

I'm not 100% sure on this based on the screenshot, but you can probably easily confirm - is there any other landmass reachable by galleys? If so, then perhaps you could go for GLH and get some cities on another landmass. Other than that, this is a tough start. Get to astro as soon as possible and see if you've got another landmass to settle somewhere, but no doubt, that's much easier said than done.

It's not a lost cause, but the better question is it a game that you'll fun with? I don't find pressing enter lots of fun, I would probably reroll a new map.

I already started a new game, so I don't have the 4000BC save, but here is the save where I took that screenshot. I've only researched fishing and mining, plus you're a few turns or so away from a worker. Bit of a sloppy start

That's not a particularly bad start at all. No jungle, plenty of forests, and room for a solid number of cities. Not too small for the mapsize and I assume they'll be various islands to settle when Astronomy comes around. It's really just an isolated start and you seem like you could do fine - couple happy resources to boot, if you're Rams you can wonder-monger right from the start and run a nice SE off of a few seafood cities; and of course definitely winnable on Monarch.

Couple of screenshots and quick thoughts.

Spoiler :

I settled the second city on the stone and prioritised the GLh and Mids. Managed to get them both + MC from the Oracle. Then headed for Astro. Mistake here in that I should of got Caste earlier and run some more scientists to help bulb. Luckily got a GE which was on Machinery as well.

No other islands to settle but with 10 opponents they didn't have much land either.

Heading for communism for State Prop, have the Globe built and drafting rifles/cannons = easy domination from here.

Still must admit would have been a lot more of a struggle at a higher level but would have gone the same route.
