Isn't 6kb for a 100x100 avatar too small?

Most of the images I have are like 20kb, I'm wondering if at all possible to increase size from 6kb. I mean, even the non-custom avatars are larger than 6kb, so I'm not really sure why it's this low.

The limit is 10kb. From the rules:
If you have 100 posts AND have been registered for 100 days, you can give yourself a custom non-animated avatar up to 100x100 pixels and 10 KB in size.
There are a lot of custom avatars here and they all seem to make the 10kb limit?

The picture is so small that you can reduce the quality of the image keeping the same size and it's not really noticeable.

It still says 6kb when I check My Account. ._. Was it changed recently?

I think I can manage with 10kb. But I checked the non-custom avatars again, most of them are 15-20kb.

I can confirm that the notice says: "Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 6.0 KB (whichever is smaller)."

Easiest way to do it is switch to a jpeg in something like paint.net and adjust the quality until the file size goes below the limit. Experiment until your image uploads as your avatar at 100x100.

If you need some help resizing your intended avatar to fit the limits we also have a thread for that.

It might be for moderators, but for everyone else the size limit is 6kb. Even the rules state it and so does the change your avatar section in your profile.

Oh, really? Anyone else of the senior members also seeing 6 kb in the "edit avatar" options?

As a guy who changes avatars like he changes underwear, it's 6 kb.

Yes, it is 6 KB. It'd be nice if it was more, but I can survive with 6.

Mine is 93 x 100 and 4.6 kb.

It is actually a bit confusing....

New members can't use a custom avatar.
Once you have been here 5 days and have 5 posts, you get moved to the "5 day / 5 post" usergroup, which (still) doesn't let you have a custom avatar, but you do get PMs etc.
Once you have been here for 30 days and have 30 posts, you can use a custom avatar. That allows you a 70x70 avatar, maximum 4kB.
Once you have been here for 100 days and have 100 posts, your allowable custom avatar size increases to 100x100, maximum 6kB in size.

Now for the confusing bit:
Once you have been here 300 days and have 300 posts, you can (bizarrely) have a 50x50 custom avatar up to 20,000 bytes. Now... that usergroup doesn't actually allow custom avatars, but the permissions system in vBulletin allows you to have the highest level allowed by any usergroup. Not sure how the avatar sizes work under that.

Anyway... I changed it so that people having been here for 300 days and having 300 posts can have a 100x100 avatar, maximum 10 kB. And increased the Private Message mailbox size to 500 for that usergroup.

Merry Christmas!

That's the best Christmas present I've got so far this year! :D (And the only one :p)

Whoa!!!!! Thank you very much. :) :)

Yay! Thanks! :) NESing will be much the better for not having to delete PMs so often.
