Issue with custom city graphics?

Goodluck! Kinda glad it isn't just me XD.
Thank you so much for trying so hard to help me figure this out.

I can't stand to be defeated by a graphics problem. I have a reputation to maintain.

Well, for whatever reason, the game had a problem with the shades of purple you used - so I fiddled with the shades until I got something that looked purple in the game. I don't think it looks all that great, but as you see in the screen shot, it's fairly close to what you intended, and it is purple.

The attached .pcx has the added advantage of adding the faction colors for SMAX, which won't affect use in SMAC. Enjoy.

Close enough! Thanks so much! So Alpha Centauri doesn't like bright purple then? :P I'll have to keep that in mind for future use.
Thanks again! I'm fairly curious how you figured out how to make them purple and what the issue was.

It was just unscientific trial and error.

I selected the purple with the Color Select Tool -looks like a hand pointing at a bar of three colors- and changed the shade a little, then selected the other shade you used and did the same, saved the result overwriting the Gaians.pcx in my root directory, and fired up the game to have a look at a save with a lot of Gaian bases. Then I repeated the process until it came out looking purple in-game. The lighter shade took longer.

Ah, sounds fun XD. Thank you so much for taking the time to do all of that. At the risk of sounding annoying, do you happen to know of a source of a blank pink faction table? making my own seems to be.....buggy.

That'd be the thing I was looking for XD. I'm curious how the blank one was made, as it doesn't seem that you can really erase or alter the background of the leader profiles without creating blobs around base icons later on.

Also, Why is it called Vanilla? Just curious XD.

Sorry for so many questions but it seems like it'd be useful to know down the road.

The problem with the background is a bug specific to GIMP; pre-Windows 7, when my old copy of PhotoShop 5 would run, it wasn't a problem - Mainiac actually originated that file, though I did do some cleaning up. The difference between GIMP and PhotoShop isn't really worth spending money, but PS does handle a lot more of the color stuff automatically for you.

Vanilla = plain, as opposed to whatever that makes Crossfire...

No problem about the questions - I'm passing on what people taught me, or at least sparing you time wasted working it out. New fans are the SMAC(X) community's future.

I guess that'd make Crossfire vanilla with all of the toppings? :P

And that's interesting. I noticed an odd....glitch I suppose myself while attempting to make the pink blank file (I did succeed!) I remembered reading on the link you sent that it'd save you deleting Yang yourself, even though I'm fairly sure you've mentioned elsewhere (on one of the posts on that site, I read through a few) that you test on gains.
You can color over the bases on Yang's image sheet but not on Deirdre's, On hers it will make whatever you painted appear as blob in the game, On Yang's it goes transparent. Wonder why that is?

It's wonderful that you pass on the knowledge, with your help I created my first set of custom bases just a bit ago (which I love).

Any chance you'd post them?

I mentioned deleting Yang because the Hive is the default FacEdit uses -FacEdit is of the devil and to be avoided, BTW- and is one of the ones you see signs of most in half-customized custom factions. I'm not familiar with the glitch you point out, but maybe I'm not following your description.

Sorry for the delayed response! I don't have the files I tested this on originally, once I had everything worked out I deleted the extra files since they no longer served a purpose, However they were just default Gaian and Yang image files pulled out of the game folder. What is FacEdit and why is it the devil? owo?

But essentially what happened it this, I was experimenting with trimming away parts of the bases by overlapping it with a painted on background color.
When I did this with the Gaian image sheet any of the strokes I made would show up in game as blobs near or on the city depending on where I was working.

When I did this with Yang, it worked and the parts of the bases I used the paintbrush on in gimp would turn transparent, effectively erasing that part of the base as intended.

I'm surprised any of that worked at all. If I touch the background in GIMP at all, it's borked.

FacEdit is (supposedly) a faction editor that comes with SMAC(X). What it actually does is break your customizing in random ways if it will even boot. Don't use it.

I was asking if you'd post your custom bases...

Oh sure!
They're pretty simplistic but I love the icy color they have in game, this is the only set I've finished so far but I'm pretty happy with it. Please try and ignore the low quality, a lot of the details were lost when it was converted.

Why did you want them out of curiosity owo??.

And is facedit that text template that has an example set up using the Gaians? I'll avoid it even still, but just curious :P.
