Unless an avatar is especially compelling for some reason, people tend to ignore them after awhile. I've had the tractor beam smiley avatar at the other forum for years, and only a few people have ever commented on it.
Sometimes a little distraction can lead to something beneficial. One person's avatar was of a guy hitting a cowbell, and it got to the point where I PM'd him and asked what his avatar represented. So he explained about the "We need more cowbell" incident. I learned a little pop culture that day and made a new forum friend.
