It's official: Bush not a true conservative

"an unrealistic frank"

I looked up the noun of "frank" on dictionary.com and got this:

n.

A mark or signature placed on a piece of mail to indicate the right to send it free of charge.
The right to send mail free.
A franked piece of mail.

What is the meaning of "frank" in Buckley's context?

Bush was only really a conservative until he started tanking in the polls.

You hit the nail on the head.

As his administration ends and his popularity drops, politicians are distancing themselves from him to help their own careers.

I was under the impression that all conservatives became really like Bush when he started tanking in the polls. :crazyeye:

Nail. Head.

Or a better way to say it would be - Bush was a conservative until he started tanking. Then all the conservatives started pretending he was really liberal. Gimme a break... does anyone believe that the next Republican president will behave differently from Bush? What would he do differently? Shrink the size of government?
