I had to bypass my router in order to log on Steam to pre-load my copy of Civ5. Now I remember why I quit CS:S years ago. Take a look of their router / port forwarding support page, so many restrictions. And I'm pretty sure Steam doesnt even work on at least half of the college campus networks. They really need to take a page from Blizzard and BattleNet.

p.s. Staying up all night and not going to work tomorrow till I play my first Civ5 game. :crazyeye:

Silly Brota, water heated to vaporous form and electronics don't mix. Don't you know that?

What is with your router that steam does not work?

The login server. Not going into technical details since I just coughed up $200 to get a new router that would allow me to add more port forwarding registry and better DMZ design. But Steam is also known for launch day screw ups and constant authentication issue. I do have HL2 / CSS / TF2 / BC2 on Steam as well.

I have several games on steam and I played multiplayer and never had any issues. I downloaded Civ5 very fast (~2mb/s) last night.

Before emoraging please describe what your problem is and maybe this community will be able to help.

I already fixed my issue. Just venting my rage on the $200 I had to spend for a new router. :D

Most consumer routers you can buy have the same functionality. What was the problem with the old one? You don't need any ports open to download a game.

My reason for bashing Steam?

Compared to BattleNet, Steam is crap. Seriously.

Battle.net doesn't have to service as many games as Steam. Battle.net has now turned into a very STRICT DRM control as all of their future games (SC 2 included) will REQUIRE you to be on it 100% of the time.

Also, you know you're supposed to turn DMZ off to get onto steam....right? That is the only reason you shouldn't be able to get on while connected to your router. They say this in their FAQ. DMZ is usually something that the user authorizes and many games don't ever require it.

This just sounds like a bad router configuration.

A lot of things don't work on college campus networks by design. I'd imagine those networks are for educational usage and not for student gaming.

You're correct. I preloaded Civ5 over my router at 2mb/s. The issue was with the login server and login server alone. I spent 2 hours going through Steam support pages. It seems to be a combination of port forwarding / firewall / DMZ / Double WAN. Bascially, the support page told me to suck it.

I did turn DMZ off, it didnt work.

AND I'm pretty sure you have to stay on Steam to play Civ5. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Again, just turn off the DMZ and you should be good. Trust me on this. I used to run with DMZ and could never log in to steam. When I turned it off, it worked. Looking at their FAQ's, they tell you to disarm it. Port forwarding and firewalls have very little to do with this as long as a DMZ is up.

Pretty sure Florida State is offering Starcraft 2 Strategy as a 2 credit elective course.

I kind of miss the 'ol 25-digits on the back of the box. Call me crazy.

<removed for edited reasons>

But we're pretty off-topic, and I suppose there are better places to post rants...
