iTunes hating my MP3s.

I have my new iPod Touch. To sync music to it I need to use iTunes. Up until now I was using Windows Media Player. However iTunes is ignoring my MP3 files. It converted WMAs to AAC but won't take the MP3s. It doesn't give an error message. If I drag it to iTunes or use add folder/file it just does nothing. This is 100GB of music on a network drive so transcoding or reencoding are not an option.

The mp3 files are mostly 320kbps (some 192s). The bit rate is not variable. They were originally ripped using WMP. They are not DRMed. Quicktime, WMP, and VLC will play the files with no problems.

iPods don't use MP3's. Here's a tutorial on how to convert them. I don't accept any responsibility for this though.

Wait, first you say they dont use mp3's and then you link to a tutorial on how to convert to mp3?

My ancient brick iPod uses mp3s just fine.

Sometimes iTunes does funny things when I drag directly to my iPod. Have you tried just dragging it to your Music folder and then putting it on the iPod?

Since the iPod Classic 2g, Ipods have been mp3 compatible. In fact iPod classic 6g can even play wmas(apple don't advertise this however) which are what your tutorial showed you how to convert. Also

Transcoding = converting to another format. I know your trying to help but you don't have a clue what your talking about. And if you read the OP as for the files that are WMA

Yes. Every possible way of adding it to the library.

Did you try using another program? From what I understand, you tried WMP and iTunes, but I think there's others.

I don't know about iPods, but is there write access on it? On my USB stick, I can disable from writing on it.

Write access on an iPod is limited to iTunes (and programs that pretend to be iTunes).

Hmmm. Just brainstorming:

Is your computer's HD full? If it is and you have "copy music to itunes library" then maybe it doesn't want to accept the new music when you put it in itunes.

Try putting your iPod in hard disk mode and then putting stuff on it using windows explorer?

Maybe it is a problem with the ipod? Have you tried putting music onto it using another computer? If it doesn't accept the mp3s, try putting mp3s onto another ipod with the same computer. If that works then the problem is likely with the ipod. In that case try resetting it/re-installing the firmware. (Whatever that is called in iTunes when it erases everything and re-installs, I forget).

Alternatively, try borrowing someone's iPod that you know works properly, and try putting mp3s on it with your computer. If that doesn't work then the problem is with your computer or your copy of itunes.

Problem sounds funny but I would just try and isolate the cause, because it clearly is not working correctly if it is not accepting mp3s. I know for a fact iPods accept non drm mp3s.

On my computer I have 60GB free on my C: drive and an entirely empty 250GB D: drive.

It's a problem with iTunes. They won't add to the iTunes library with or without my iPod connected. I can't test syncing the files to someone elses iPod as I can't get them into iTunes to sync. Like I said earlier, it's just my mp3s its rejecting it takes aacs fine and converts wmas to aacs automatically.

Not a good idea. iPods like to be synced to one computer and one computer only. If you try to sync it to a different computer, it'll overwrite the information there and the iPod will now be synced to the other computer.

Of course, you could do that if you have a backup and don't mind spending the time recopying everything back....

Did you try another program to add the files? I don't know of any, although there probably are some.

That is not difficult to avoid. Turn sync off. Easy.

Sync is dumb anyway IMO.`

Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing itunes?

Have you turned automatic sync off and then tried dragging the files? Have you tried asking itunes to automatically detect music on the drive?

Is it just these mp3s? Do you have any other mp3s you can put into itunes? Can you try taking a few off the network drive onto, say, a memory stick and then adding them?

If all else fails try downloading some itunes free alternative, like Yamipod or something, although I can't vouch for the safety of any of them as I have not used any other than Yamipod, and I have an ancient iPod.
