I'm playing this game for the first time. It was released a long time ago, but I felt the urge for some BioWare and couldn't find my Neverwinter Nights 2 CD-key. This game is surprisingly enjoying -- the combat is a trillion times more repetitive than all other BioWare games combined (it might just be because I'm playing a Fast character and only use Thousand Cuts), but the characters are surprisingly likable, especially Wild Flower.

Did you notice that Sir Roderick is played by John Cleese? Skip to 3:00 of this video.

I love Jade Empire.
True, the combat is simple and repetitive but the game has great characters and an interesting, fresh scenario.
And the "romance" options include gay sex and threesomes.

i played it for the first time last year best 4 bucks I have spent on a game in recent memory.

I'm sort-of stuck on the gold league division of the Imperial Arena. I'm at the part where you have to re-fight every champion and they're released every 10 seconds. I'm very close to beating it, it's just that when all three Shi brothers are working together at the end with the elephant demon, I'm too low on chi to finish the fight up. I have the Chi Theft style but it doesn't restore it fast enough.

It might partially be because I have no crowd control to speak of. Is there a more efficient way than just taking on each guy individually?

All I can say is finish the first enemies as fast as possible and concentrate on one brother at a time until he's out. Don't use focus until the elephant demon comes in and make sure to time it right. When you see he's about to strike activate focus and dodge, than deactivate it again and hit him a couple of times. Don't stay in focus longer than one or two seconds at a time or the bar will run out. After the elephant demon it gets easier again.

Played it and loved it, even though its not perfect. I managed to get the Player/Dawn Star/Princess threesome by accident the first time I played through, lol. Damn you Master Li!!!

Edit: Oh yeah, I love that John Cleese played Sir Roderick Ponce von Fontlebottom the Magnificent Bar-Steward.

I'd take Jade Empire combat over Mass Effect combat any day. The whole game is amazing, in my opinion, and really underrated.

Yeah, another JE fan here. The combat can get a little repetative - only having 3 (?) moves per style limits the variety - but it's still enjoyable, while the characters, setting and story are brilliant. Wish Bioware would make a sequel.

I loved that game. Almost want to fire it up again now that I've read this thread. It's been years since I played it, but it was awesome at the time. I was hooked as soon as I heard "Kung-fu RPG," and still wish BioWare would consider a sequel.
