Sommerswerd asked me to change this
I should probably clarify some of the comments I've made here lest some people think I'm anti-Greek or something.
Why is there a crisis in Greece? Because they ran out of money. Why did they run out of money? From my understanding it is for 2 reasons:
1. Swanky & usually unnecessary public jobs created by the government for 1/3 of the country, with amazing benefits, long vacation, and super early retirement.
2. Tax evasion.
So the EU steps in and bails the country out, under one condition: Reform! Get rid of some of those swanky benefits..
Was that really too much to ask for? Is it humiliating? Really?
I know it's easy to talk about this from 10,000km away, but if my government was so incompetent as to run a country like that, I'd be mad at them.. not at the "financial institutions" or whatever. I'd also be mad at all the Greeks who don't pay their taxes.
