JOE-06 - Big Fat Metal Barons

About level of play: I can see a somewhat straightforward way to win this on Prince: Achieve an overwhelming military superiority against everyone, eliminate all AI civs except for one non metal city (guess we can find that) that we maintain under "surveilance", while keeping our lands below domination limit (raze a lot). then send settlers to all metals left and found the cities on the same turn. What I mean by that is at Prince I feel we can play a normal conquest game with no reason to think about the variant until the very end.

I prefer to play a game with more uncertainty, so I would say Monarch. But will be happy to play at Prince (and of course I could be wrong about the above).

Lucky1972 demonstrates possession of a gift for analysis and I vote for Monarch, as well. Even in an SG, Conquest victories at Monarch are not certain.

Unless, of course, we add a twist to the variant. Not only do we have to control the metal resource, we must also trade it for gold or another resource, ala the Hunt Brothers?

Which metals? -- I vote for Industrial Metals (5).

Leader? -- I have no preference. Consider me a vote for Random.

As far as SG rules go, there's a proposed SG Etiquette on Deviant Minds that is quite relevant. You might also want to follow the continuing discussion but I warn you the level of respect that the participants show for each other is quite low and may not be suitable for all ages. ;) The part about worker automation is still under discussion and I vote that we not permit it here.

America comes to mind for non-penalised attacks from boats as well as ground forces.

In the Monarch game I´m playing wright now I randomly got Ragnar (agressive, financial). I just loved his UU (Berserker, replaces maceman), because it comes with anphibios promotion, so now I have a bunch of grenadiers with anphibious:hammer: And I can still build them! I never played with America, so I don´t realy know how useful are the navy seals, but with Berserkers you can have anphibious units earlier and longer.

But this is not a vote for Ragnar. In fact, most Warlords leaders I don´t know. Organized does seems useful for the variant but I never played with that either.

Ok, right now I don´t have a clear opinion about leaders and traits, but will give it some thought.

@GreyFox, JOE: Thanks for the imput about reports, pictures and logs. I had allready installed ruff-hi mod, but never used the log feature, will look into that. And I have seen log reports under spoiler tags, but never read them, so I understand what you mean. I just want to make sure I dont forget anything important. I will also check photobucked.

as i am not playing but do enjoy following interesting games (because i can learn a lot) i would vote for seeing option 3.

@ChrTh
You mentioned something about having to sell the metals...from the sign-up page...

...we must control all the to be decided metals by the end of the game. We can trade it for nothing more than gold.

@GreyFox
... man, this guy is crazy on votes. We haven't even started the game and already two votes casted.

I'm not usually, but this variant seems to have sparked some other options...besides, I'm a democratic sg captain, not a fascist dictator (well...not usually). :D

Checking in as a lurker (Read: waiting for Fox to snap). Unfortunately, I agree with Lucky. You have a problem with the variant rules allowing you to treat this as a perfectly normal conquest right up until the end. Perhaps add something of a "Free the Metals" activism that requires you to liberate your metals immediately?

Oh, and what about all the mercury in the fish?

@frank: I don't send players playing with me for the first time to the woodshed ... judging from this roster, you are the only woodshed-candidate :D

While it is true we can definitely play it the way lucky outlined, I think the main objective of any game is to have fun ... so it is up to the players to play it the fun way. To make this game less frustrating, we should perhaps turn off Domination. (Now, another thing for JoE to call for votes ;)).

@Rex: yeah, and hydrogen in all the water? (hydrogen having one valence electron can lose it or gain one more to reach stable configuration; when it loses electron, it behaves like a metal, if I remember my middle school chemistry).

Oh poo. You're right...can't believe I didn't see it. I'll put my thinking cap on and attempt a variant rethink on the same theme.

Nope, I'm turning on fascist dictator mode for that one. It stays on (I have thought about this). It'll make us think more carefully about how we grab the metals.

vra, you're in and the roster is closed.

Thinks...

The variant:

We must control all copper, iron and aluminium resources in the world.
We have to be selling (for gold) at least one resource to every civ by the end of the game. That's active deals at games end making Diplomacy a bit more fun.
We must NOT wipe out any civilization...they are paying customers after all.

How about that?

lurker's comment:

I'm enjoying the idea... if done properly, this can be a overkill game :devil: .
Too bad you entered in dictator mode :lol: : I would have suggested controlling uranium as well ( can you spell :nuke: diplomacy ? :lol: ).

Good Idea this SG! :goodjob: I'm waiting to learn something....
