Florida discounted votes where the voter had punched the hole for Gore and had then written in Gore on the write-in line as well. How is that NOT ****ed up? Then again, Florida and neighboring states have a long tradition of trying to make sure the fewest people vote, and even after that the fewest ballots get counted.

Question: Were the ballots for Bush in which the voter had punched the hole for Bush and then written in Bush on the write-in line tossed as well?

You bet your bippy. So how is that not fair?

Is it our fault that people who voted for Gore cant follow the rules to the extent that Bush voters did?

No.

Yes. And the study the article is about looked at votes for both candidates. More double votes were cast for Gore. If these can be counted for the reason given, then why not?

Because we are a nation of rules and standards. If you mess your ballot up and dont follow the rules, it should be tossed.

Look. The rules are not hard to follow and they exist for a reason. Double voting is against the rules....for any candidate.

If you are such an idiot that you are in the less than 1% margin that cant follow extremely simple rules, should your vote be counted if you mess up your ballot?

The logical answer to that is 'no'.

All this seems to prove is that a majority of less intelligent people voted (or at least attempted to vote) for Gore. Something we already knew.

Anyone who didn't vote correctly, for either candidate, should have their ballot removed from consideration. The ballots include instructions, and really aren't that tough to figure out. If you aren't smart enough to figure out how to vote, then I'm having a hard time thinking that you're smart enough to wisely choose the President of the United States.

There should also be some effect of 'vote cancellation' that doesn't change the overall outcome as well. If a percentage of voters don't push hard enough and have "hanging chads", punch the wrong hole, etc. the 'wrong' ballots should come from voters of both parties that mis-cast their vote and should not mathematically change the overall outcome by much.

Bush either barely won or barely lost Florida. Based on how unloved he has become since then is exactly why he couldn't come near to repeating such a feat today, despite MB personally having "no doubt about it at all".

EDIT - Corrected typo.

A question to mobboss :

were you one of the ( realtime yet constantly over hours ) 85% on Fox who voted Bush did an excellent job on the SOTU ? Saw that on Daily Show, hilarious.

How could anybody possibly do a worse job on anything than Bush? Seriously now? Gore would be a disaster, then what is Bush? Apocalypse probably.

The answer is YES. Unless you can show me the part of the US constitution that exempts 'idiots' from voting.

The article clearly says these votes could be counted if voter intent is clear.

I actually do agree that people who go so far as to physically write the name on the ballot should have their vote counted. However, it still makes me think they're more or less...
Code:
     (REPUBLICAN)
GEORGE W. BUSH president ----> [] (MORON PARTY)
DICK CHENEY vice-president I'm such a complete idiot that
though I meant to vote for Gore
[] <---- I was baffled by this extremely
simple ballot. I am clearly too
(DEMOCRAT) stupid to be included in the
AL GORE president ----> [] process of electing a President.

Nope, I didnt take the poll. I didnt watch the SOTU anyway, so I cant comment on it.

And yes, to answer your childishly silly question, a lot of people could do much worse than Bush. All it takes is a smidge of intelligence to figure that one out.

Many onlookers would say that the idiots who voted for Gore were overwhelmingly outnumbered by those voting for Bush. But there ya go.;)

No, but it does give us the right to make laws and standards on what is acceptable and what isnt.

Mangling your ballot so that it isnt counted does not mean you have a right to have it counted. Follow the rules, or dont vote.

I heartily endorse all idiots to vote. In turn all I ask is for those idiots to comply with the rules just like all the non-idiots.

That isnt too much to ask.

Marking your vote for Gore and writing 'Gore' on it hardly counts as 'mangling your ballot' does it?

 we still put an 'X' in a box over here.

And I guarentee there is a certain percentage of your fellow countrymen who still manage to screw that up.

Should their vote be counted as well?

Please, folks, remember that the people who keep on talking about how the voters are "idiots" and why their votes shouldn't count, are the ones who marked the little box for Bush.

Twice.

You'd think a sense of chagrin and shame would inspire a respectful silence.

If they had a sense of shame that is.

Yeah, thats us. People who can actually read and comprehend ballot instructions.

Yup...we even retained the information and knowledge of how to fill our ballots out. Imagine that.

However, it would seem that those Flordians from 2000 migrated to Ohio....

Should I be shameful of my ability to correctly fill out a ballot? Interesting.

Yeah, the defense pretty much rests after that post.

Wow. Imagine that. Life is hard. Fill your ballot out correctly like the vast majority does or go home. What should we call people who whine about lost elections years down the road, because they couldnt figure out simple ballot instructions?

I will let you answer that.

It's really quite simple MobBoss.

If a ballot is marked for Bush twice, it should be counted for Bush (once ;)).

If you disagree, please do America a favor by moving to Putin's Russia, where they count ballots your way  according to a long-standing tradition.
