Christianity does promote missions where the word is spread, but I was interpreting pacifism as being the opposite of material violence. These are two very different issues.

Passive on social issues. Jews are less likely to try and tell you how to live your life.
The missionary aspect plays heavily into that. Even in the propensity to take up arms, I'd argue Jews have been the most passive next to Buddhists over the last 2000 years or so.

Anyway, back to topic, given the nature of primaries, each party nominates the guy who appeals to their extreme wing better, centrists like Lieberman and McCain don't stand a chance of winning their party's nomination.

Thats very true. But then, who will be nominated in 2004 for the dems? I don't see any hardcore liberals among them. Perhaps Kerry or Dean? Unfortunately it will be very difficult for a New Englander to win the main election versus a Republican from the south...

I thought the topic of the thread was whether there was racism in the southern states. Of course there is. But this is not example of it.
Too often when someone disagrees with a politician, who is a minority, that person is accused of racism. This sort of knee-jerk reaction trivializes real racism and undermines legitimate debate. It's happened several times lately here in Georgia with regards to Cynthia McKinney, a former congresswoman and in City of Atlanta politics. Now according to the initial post in this thread I can't vote for someone who would better represent me and my values without being called a racist.

What accused you of being a racist? Atlanta is pretty liberal as far as the south goes, it is a major urban area, after all.

I can finally weigh in and here it is:
Joseph Liebermann will win the primary and go on to be the first Jewish and second non-WASP president of the United States.
I would have agreed two years ago that there was no way a Jewish man could get the Presidency, but then he won the vice Presidency. Yes, Gore would have picked up another southern state or two if he'd picked a southern WASP running mate, but that was then.
This is now- America knows unprecedented sympathy and empathy for the state of Israel, and the demonization of Muslims has pushed the Jewish people one category to the right. Liebermann will steal some republican votes, make no mistake!
Yes he is a centrist- way too centrist for my taste- but that is another asset. Just as tough on Iraq, but sharper on the economy and legitimately concerned about all those issues- environment, health care, etc.- that have gone to the back burner while we struggle to change Middle Eastern regimes. He already takes the angle that "I've been saying for years we need to get tough on Iraq", beating Bush to that punch.
He just needs to make sure he has the right running partner, someone who can cover the angles he misses.

How about Carol Moseley-Braun? She should cover all the angles. Think about it. We will have the male and female vote, the Jewish and Christian vote, the white and black vote, and the pro-war and anti-war vote. The Liebermann/Moseley-Braun combo can't miss. All hyphenated Americans will be represented, even those with hyphenated last names. Maybe we will finally make some progress towards slave reparations and socialized health care. We can turn back the clock on Bush by reinstating the use of quotas, and negating his evil environmental changes, such as allowing power companies to make modifications that increase generation but do not effect pollution.
Then again, we will probably put a man on Mars before a Jewish person holds the presidency. But don't fret, as I said in another thread, I'm predicting that will happen in the next 25 years.

While being jewish is certainly a handicap, it's a pretty minor one compared to being atheist.

Which was to say the opposite, extremists in either party never get the nomination.
