Because we are very low on luxuries and because Molly has a Wonder prebuild nearing completion, and because we will start acquiring new cities from the Fomorach, I believe we should shift priorities for a moment and research Music Theory so we can build JS Bach's Cathedral. Especially since there appears to be no Saltpeter on our continent at the moment.

1. More happiness to our cities
2. Save the shields in the prebuild, which might get wasted
3. No Saltpeter means no Cavalry anyways.

Until we discover any Saltpeter, we may also want to head towards Banking and Economics. There lies yet another Great Wonder.

Should we shift our research priorities?

Hmm... The Byzantines have Salt Peter..... On our continent...

Just west of Caesarea

With this new development I can't help but wonder if the Fomorach might wait until we ensure we grab this valuable resource...

Thoughts?

Wow! I don't know how I missed that one. My apologies.

Ok, so the Byzantines will have Saltpeter when the discover Gunpowder. We're still up on them.

Getting to the Fomorach's Spices will be easier than getting to the Byz Spices. The Fomorach have easier land to cross and better land to develop. I personally believe we should put our Forbidden Palace somewhere around York. Maybe raze York and relocate it to the SE across the river. Then use a Leader to rush the FP. Once we get our empire set up in basically the same Latitude, we can start moving South. Just my thoughts.

So, I say with the lux being a priority and the Fomorach land being better and easier to obtain, we should stick with the original attack plan. This will still keep us from geting Saltpeter for a while, but our citizens will be much happier.

And we still have the first two points to consider.

Need to get the new Tech 'n' Trade guy in on this.

My initial, shoot-from-the-hip reaction (as new Minister of Domestics) is that this is a no-brainer and should be done, since JS Bach's effects happen without needing any other improvements built, unlike the other super-snotty cultural wonder that needs Cathedrals to be worthwhile.

Further examination may reveal something else, however.

Good. We've only spent 1 turn on Chemistry, so switching to Music Theory in the pre-turn will not be a major loss for us.

Sorry, didn't mean to thread-jack. Nearly missed that Saltpeter myself. Anyway we might be able to get some through trade with the Ottomans. Just don't want to go too long without any Saltpeter.

On topic though, I have no issue with Bach's Cathedral. I don't get a sense of a Happiness crisis though (but last time I looked at the save I was focused on Rhiannon and didn't see the Lux. slider). I don't think Bach's Cathedral makes happy faces though... just makes unhappy citizens content. I think that's the real reason for Luxuries, to make content citizens happy. Though I could be mistaken.

JS Bachs is right handy to have, not a necessity, but nice to have. 2 unhappies content can lower or even eliminate the need for lux spending. I'd go for it, but we must not trade the tech until after it is built. As to where, Tara may have the most shields available.
