GAH~!!!!!!!

We need subs!

Submarines before Frigates????

Oh, substitutes? I'll be happy to play a round or two. You folks are doing great here. I hope to learn more. Maybe I can help get that power rating up. Otherwise, a visit from Monty is guaranteed and he won't be bringing cookies or cake.

I played my turnset last night.

You guys are going to love me, or hate me.

Our diplomatic situation was a mess. So I did something about it. Let's face facts here. The only way we're going to win is by Diplomatic victory...unless we just bring an overwhelming army and swarm the continent later on if we get a decisive tech advantage.

We needed to start on getting people please with us. The Buddhist block is the obvious way to go.

Here are my goals.

1) Get Pleased or Friendly with all Buddhist Block Members
2) In time, get them to all turn on Tokogawa.
3) Build UN
4) Win

I'm happy to report that #1 has been accomplished in my ten turns.

Okay, so I revolted to slavery, and whipped some granaries, libraries, galleons, settlers, WHIP IT AND WHIP IT GOOD!

I put London to build the National Epic. Since we get alot of specialists, we should get alot of Great People. We need Great People.

Galleon with Longbowmen, Settler took off. Sent over another Galleon with a worker. Founded a city to get the 2 gold and iron. Must improve it fast.

Building another settler.

IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE GET 2 MORE SETTLERS OVER TO NEWFOUNDLAND ASAP!!!!!

ASAP!!!!! We MUST claim this continent before the other powers that be get there?

Wait? How could they get there?

Let's go back to objective 1. Diplomacy.

This is what I did.

1) Created a DogPile war on JC. Literally all the Buddhist countries are attacking him now. Gotta love those mutual struggle bonuses.
2) I traded as many resources as I could.
3) I traded Navigation. I got us 4 techs in return, plus I got open borders with toko and pleased status. I traded guilds to monty to get him to declare on Julius.

So basically, right now, the main continent is destroying JC.

GOALS TO GO

We must try to undermine support for Toko. What can we do? (Get him to declare against anyone Asoka or Frederick)

We might get hit , but he'll get hit worse.

We want to get Toko to the point that he goes to war with us. He can't touch us anyways, as long as we have naval power.

I'll send the save file later. I have no problem with Frank helping out.

So that's the situation. Love it or hate it, I made the decision to put our eggs into the diplomatic basket.

Let it commence

And we're back in caste system

Researching gunpowder

Frank...not a problem...consider yourself in...once jericho posts the save, you're off...

also, good job w/the settlers and such...we need to expand...once we fill up these islands, we WILL be a powerhouse, esp at the onset of the industrial age when the AI is slow to build factories/plants ~ destroyers and subs e'erywhere!

and, diplo really was the way to go w/this...once the buddhism disappears from the equation, it will a lot easier to get others to attack Tokie as well

I wish I could have looked over your shoulder as you played that one!

i'll go into more detail about it

Plans changed, so I wont be back home until sunday to put the save file up.

Its up now

Basically, Diplomacy just means knowing how to butter guys up. The more friendly you are with someone's friends, the more your efforts will make them friendlier.

Start with open borders to all buddhists, or at least try.

Then trade resources for gold (ones that we have extra of) We'll want to bump up how much theyre worth to us from time to time

Then trade techs. I got a big boost for doing this.

When all else fails, gift a tech that someone already has.

Bada bing, we've got friends now

Nice turnset!

I just spotted this but I'm at work on Monday morning. I can pick it up and play when I get home this afternoon. If someone else wants to go next instead, just post here. I'll check before downloading Jericho's save.

Frank ~ that's fine...pick it up tonight and play 15...I'll drop back to 10 again once I get to pick it up.

We should totally be on the way now to a diplo victory.

Here's a hint some know, some don't. When the AI comes to you for a trade offer, hit the F4 key. You'll be able to see the relationship screen, so you can look at that to determine if we should or should not trade with this guy.

At this moment, we do not care about pissing Toko off. But we must make sure we do not tick off the other buddhists.

that's a great tip ~ i had no idea...

User comment: Decisions, decisions. Send Galileo to Rheims to build an acadamy? To Paris to add as specialist? Or knock 6 or 7 turns off Chemistry. I'll go for the immediate gratification.

Turn 282 (1260 AD)
User comment: Dang Russkies just landed a longbowman and settler on OUR new island. Ratz. Better get that settler there fast before more company arrives.
User comment: Nevermind. England has a galleon off our north coast heading to the new island. This one with TWO longbowmen and a settler.
Rheims finishes: Longbowman
Marseilles grows: 4

Turn 283 (1265 AD)

User comment: Decisions: Revolt to mercantilism? It'll be hard to get religion without trade routes. Pacificsm? Meanwhile, our explorer and caravels report that it's hard to find any evidence of activity in the war against Rome on the main continent.

Wow. That was really fast for the AI to have a galleon settler longbow combo.

My bad guys. I thought the gamble would work.

Plan B: We need to out-culture them on the island. Theatre, Library, Religious stuff all needs to go there. We can take their cities peacefully with culture.

We need foreign trade routes for relations purposes.

I would've kept the war going unless we needed the gold...more +1 mutual struggle modifiers. We're not winning this thing by conquest here...

why'd we move our settler to not go to the island? Did they beat us there?

Good turns, though i agree that peace w/JC was unneccessary...however, we can just redeclare either immediately or wait until someone asks us...

and mercantilism would be a poor choice at this point ~ we need those trade routes as well as the religion

why'd we move our settler to not go to the island? Did they beat us there?
It seemed as if, w/the Russians and the English settling on the island, there was no room for us. That's my guess ~ perhaps if someone can check the save for a screenshot. Also, i will pick this up tonight and play.

Damn! Perhaps it would have been wiser to wait until we had settled Newfoundland before trading away Astronomy. Oh well, hindsight is 20:20. At least we got the best city site (argueably) over there. The culture gambit might work, especially if we can get a Great Artist over there.

Since our military is crap, Pacifism is probably the best relgious civic ATM. It will boost our economy and pump out the Great Leaders faster.

Since the AIs have galleons now, how long before one of them shows up with an invasion force? What's the likelihood that one of our new-found friends will betray us?

I agree on Pacifism. We'll be patrolling the high seas anyways.

We're going to need to get frigates soon to combat a galleon invasion force. 3 stacks of 3 frigates should be good enough to protect us.

We should keep the AI warring with each other on the main continent. They won't declare more than 1 war.

The Russian settler landed, and I spotted the English galleon with settler before I could even get our settler onto a galleon. At that point, I diverted him to settle the fishing village instead. The AI settlers wandered around a few turns but there still was never going to be enough time to get our settler there.

I was able to improve our power curve some by building 3 units in Lyons (that's a likely spot for Heroic Epic). I started a musketman in Paris and a frigate in Lyons. I agree more frigates should be a priority.

We should probably set our current naval forces to patrol positions that will spot possible invasion forces. With an improved road network we could build a swift reaction force of musketeers and hopefully defeat any invasion that makes it past our frigates.
