Junk food banned in school meals

I was happy when my meal at school was edible. Some..... soup I'd rather not know what it was made of... and then some meat and potatoes or some noodles. I hated school meals even though I usually ate at home.

So that doesn't sound so bad to me... No pizza at school? I mean.... that's terrible /sarcasm ;)

Tycoon, I'll be more direct. Children don't make decisions based on what is best for their health, they make decisions based on what tastes nicest and what food is cool (burgers=cool, sprouts=not cool). You can't expect them to make these kinds of decisions as they do not understand the consequences.

If the government was removed entirely (i.e., schools privatized, anarchism) the population (hopefully of an ecovillage) could choose what a school should have or not. People of the area need to choose, not an all emcompasing corrupt power, whether it's in England or elsewhere.

Why do they want to destroy childhood? Junk food is one of the great things about growing up. At that age you can eat tons of it and not have to worry about dropping dead afterwords because your arteries are clogged with congealed grease.

I agree. the funnest things in a childs life are ones that adults consider dangerous, and you know what, i like it that way. adults telling kids its agains the rules, kids occasionally breaking that rule, adult gets mad at child if caught. All the funnest moments in my childhood were dangerous or disrespectful in atleast one way.

They have no right to force children to eat healthy, although I advocate it. If the children wish to kill themselves by eating crud, then let them! Not force outlandish laws upon them to "Save Our Youth". Jeez...

and they want to do smack (heroin), who are we to stop them. Seriously, that is probably the most flawed argument ever.

Doesn't affect me. My school offers a load of unhealthy junk food choices. I decided long ago to live my life healthier and cut that crap out, so everyday I bag a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread, with two pieces of fruit, a bag of pretzels, and a water or diet soda. Too bad my peers can't make the same good decisions.

People who know better. Kids cannot make all decisions for themselves, that is why humans stay with their parents into their teen years.

It's their body, if they think it's better, why not? Granted, I think large food/restaurant chains are bad.

Hmm, no more low quality meat! :yeah:

But for us, we still have those things. But the cafeteria doesn't sell soda. We have to trek across the school to the other end of the building to reach the soda vending machines. ;)

All kidding aside, of course good nutrition is important for kids, but people need to relax. Educate kids about proper nutrition, instill good eating habits in them at home, and then offer healthier foods in schools, along with the more traditional fare. Many will begin choosing the heathier food, others will stick with cheeseburgers and french fries, thats ok, theyre just kids. Its ok if kids eat cheeseburgers and french fries, everyone calm down, theres no need for panic:rolleyes:

I don't see the bad. Kids can get junk food at home or bring it from home. I don't see why there is any bad except from the tax payers pockets. I guess some people here are just crazy. I would love if my school fed us nutritious food but at the moment it is healthier not to eat lunch at all than to eat my school lunch.

Because they are not mature enough to make decisions for themselves, they do not comprehend the consequences. Why not give them cigarettes, whiskey and dope while we're at it?

Yes... I agree we should guide children.

They are not responsible enough to make certain decisions.

If they want junk food they can get it out of school anyway... or bring in a packed lunch.

I have to say that is a rather broad generalization. I decided three years ago I would live a healthier life (17 now) and lose many of the very unhealthy eatting habits. This was brought about not by any outside force, but my own desire to do something about it. I knew my poor eatting habits/workout routine would hurt me later in life.

I would also like to say that teens and children are not the only ones not mature enough to make decisions themselves. Look at the extremely high obesity rate in industrialized nations among adults. The solution is not to outright ban it, but rather instill better eating habits, offer healthier choices, and even subsidize the healthier choices by adding an extra cost to the unhealthy choices. Take away one of the most appealing aspects of junk food to teenagers, low cost, and you will see a healthier youth.

Im glad I dont go to school anymore, I used to love turkey burgers it was the only stuff that looked any good, well except hotdogs.

Nah, it was all about the funny processed meat things that were the shape of dinosours!
