Ok, so as the title implies, I have just become the proud new owner of a recently upgraded MGE! I have not actually played the game yet, mind you. I have just been checking out the massive amount of dl's that are available and marveling at the size of the new maps!

I thought that 32,000 was the largest map possible, but I have one called 'gigaworld' or some such that exceeds 58,000.

One thing I noticed on this huge map though, is that the standard Europe map is actually bigger for the region that it represents, ie... playing the map used in the WWII scenario, Germany is bigger (has more squares) than it does in the 'gigaworld' map.

I know that I am going to enjoy making my own ultra-huge maps in the near future, but I have some questions:

Is there a utility program that allows importing landmasses from one map into another map? I briefly looked over the file descriptions in the dl section, but none of them mentioned such a feature.

What I am basically wanting to do is build my own map, but to base it on an expanded Europe map (the one that came with civ2 retail). Is there a quick and easy way to do this? Or am I going to have to painstakingly 'build' the map square by square?

I am sure that I will have many more questions as I explore the many new and interesting aspect of the updated software.

Well there's the Civ2 map editor and Mercator's MapEdit utility. I'm not sure if the MGE map editor supports gigamaps. If not, you can always download the one altered by Mercator for ToT. To copy and paste chunks of continents, you'll need to save both maps as BMPs using MapEdit, do your editing with a graphics editor, and then use MapEdit again to save the new map as an MP file. Use the Civ2 map editor to clean up.

I am not seeing the 32K units in my current game, so some questions.

I am playing a custom scenario, which I created using the WWII map (but nothing else from that scenario), before I upgraded to MGE and then patched for unlimited.

Can I play a scenario with these options, or just the standard game?
If I can play a custom scenario, does it have to be created new after the upgrade and patches?

Thanks guys.

I tested that type of thing once in ToT. I launched Civ2 Unlimited and, using a saved game created with an unpatched EXE, created in excess of 3000 units with events. I was still able to build more units. I don't remember if it was a scenario or not. The file formats are so similar that I don't think it would make a difference.

This is the second attempt that has failed due to "to many units", but I am still trying to play the old scenario, so maybe I need to recreate the start under MGE/Unlimited for it to have the new limits.

Thanks once again for the timely reply.

Apart from the initial testing of the extra events space (which turned out to be buggy and was subsequently removed), I've barely used Civ2 Unlimited; and even then, it was the ToT version. I think McMonkey has used it in multi-player scenario games for MGE, so maybe he can shine some light on the subject.

ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

Ok, so I am still trying to get a map (other than a random one) created bigger than the 10,000 and with dimensions larger than the 75X120 of the Europe map that comes with the retail version of the game in the WWII scenario.

civmap naturally doesn't do this, so I tried to use mapedit, and it keeps giving an error saying that I need the file:

MSSTDFMT.DLL

installed on my computer. As the file is just below the mapedit file, I cannot figure out what is wrong except for the capitalized "DLL" it. All the other 'dll' files are in lower case except this one. Is this a known bug or am I just having a bad day?

Help?

Did you try loading the map using the version of Civ2Map on Mercator's site?

I don't have that file in my MapEdit folder, it's in my System32 folder. I couldn't get it to work from the MapEdit folder, either. If you're using a 32-bit version of Windows, try dropping it in your \Windows\System32 folder. For 64-bit Windows, try the \Windows\SysWOW64 folder. In case yours is corrupt, I'll attach mine here.

It may seem like an obvious question but are you double clicking the Civ2Unlimited.exe icon in your scenario folder (or a shortcut to that exe)? You can have both the original Civ2.exe and the Civ2Unlimited.exe in the folder together and launch either. You have to launch the Unlimited one to be able to have the extra units though.
