K-Mod: Far Beyond the Sword

In my opinion, a warrior will never kill an archer in a city. Therefore, when the ai has 2 or 3 archers, they can escort a worker or settler at very little risk, while only keeping one or two archers for defense.

I dont know why the ai doesnt follow up when their first archer lost.

Would it possible for the ai to have special rules in like the first 75 turns? Mid/late game, delaying a settler wouldnt be that big a deal, but early game...

First of all, I'm mostly happy with this mod and wanted to thank you for all the hard work you put into it. Congrats on making the game run smoother and more intelligently, too.

I've got a question about something that I happened to notice in my game. I was playing on Noble mode to test the mod out when I saw this:
Spoiler :

Boudica managed to build a city on Noble mode before establishing the first religion of the game! I do not have choose religions on and while I do have goody huts enabled (by mistake), that doesn't explain how she got her settler so quickly. Or does it?

Since I'm writing this, I might as well make a suggestion or two: Serfdom isn't just a weak civic that needs a boost; rather, nobody uses it because slavery is too powerful. I don't know how easy it is to do, but you might consider some sort of sliding scale for whipping penalties: 2x for whipping without a single hammer, 1.5x for being less than half-way completed. Something like that.

Also, the AI workers still build a ton of roads everywhere. This is offset somewhat by their increased willingness to chop, but still hurts the AI.

Some things that I really like about the mod so far: much better introductions. I know that that's just flavor, but I appreciate none-the-less. Far fewer syncing problems in MP (I haven't seen any OOC error messages, but I have seen "waiting to hear from player foo". The city governor seems to react more strongly when you emphasize production vs. food or what have you. This could probably use a tweak, but it's a step in the right direction.

Ack! I just tried to load my first saved MP game, but the game keeps crashing on me! It gets less than a quarter of the way through initializing. I hope whatever is wrong here is easily fixable.

I haven't had any problems with multiplayer save games myself, so I have no idea what's causing the crash. If you upload the save here, I'll try to see if it's a problem in the mod, or just a corrupt save file or something.

Regarding Boudica's Buddhist holy city; my guess it that it's not really a case a of Boudica getting an extremely fast settler, but rather than Buddhism was founded a bit later than it usually is. The way the AI chooses research is quite different to how it was done in the original BtS AI. In this case, I suppose the AI wanted to research a couple of worker techs before getting meditation.

I play nothing but multiplayer with this mod, and the only crash I had Karadoc has identified. (See earlier post). 3 different games today in fact. 2 finished ones and one more saved for later.

I don't even have a numpad on my laptop, so I doubt that that is the problem. Below is the save. I was playing as Christmas Past (the leader is Roosevelt, I think).

By the way, we had no trouble getting a new game started, though we didn't even try loading our new game (the mod was harder than my partner thought and we were scurrying for survival against the AI's. We decided to start over sometime into our game. Good times).

This may be a stupid question, but is there any way to give the mod a direct .exe so I don't have to go through that whole load the game, then load the mod fiasco? My laptop's a bit old so the loading takes a while and it's annoying to have to go through it twice, and I love this mod enough that I use it almost exclusively.

Update: I started a new game last time. Well, I was able to load the initial autosave. The game crashed on me at about 100 turns in and I wasn't able to load the game up again.

@MilesBeyond: you can change your shortcut to automatically add the mod on load. Follow the directions in the readme.

The instructions in the readme didn't work for me. The following did:

"C:\Games\Civ4Complete\Beyond the Sword\Civ4BeyondSword.exe" mod="K-Mod"

Great mod. Thanks for all the effort you put into it, Karadoc. You've made me return to a game I'd lost interest in.

I'm a noob to the forums and civ-modding, so forgive me if i'm making a point that's common knowledge: I ran into consistent game crashes when running kmod (merged with some other mods from this site, so unsure where the problem lay precisely) until i ran the beyondthesword exe in compatability mode for winXP (i'm running win7). Now no more crashes and i'm free to get butchered by the AI to my hearts content!

I've heard a few people say that compatibility mode has solved some problems for them. So that's certainly worth trying. But I myself play on Windows 7 without compatibility mode; so there must be some other problem.

You're right. The instructions in the readme are wrong. Thanks. (I use roughly the same command that you use. I'm not sure why I wrote the wrong thing in the readme.)

I loaded the multiplayer save that you posted and it worked correctly. I only loaded it with one player in the game (playing as the Americans). I'm at a bit of a loss as to what could be causing it to crash for you. If you can get an save game from immediately before the crash, I'd like to see that. (Ideally, I'd like to load the save, press end turn, and see it crash.)

Is anyone winning at an emperor or above level? Ive lost 5 games, and Im doing well on the 6th, but the wars are crazy. Im winning 85% of the fights, but their forces pour fourth endlessly....:D

Sorry, I don't have any other saves left. I wonder if the issue could be with the LAN setting. I play over the LAN and when I tried loading the game that way it crashes even when I load it by myself. I just tried it on hotseat mode and still crashed, but maybe doing it online would let it work right?

I guess the other option is that it's somehow computer dependent. My partner's game never crashed on him, after all.

Meh, I don't want to consume all of your time with my petty issue. Maybe I should just play this on single player anyway. We had some (different) issues trying to run the BUG mod together too. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

My friend an I play together all the time, we use direct IP connection(1500 miles apart). Also we make sure our bug settings are all exactly the same, I don't know if it matters really but it is a hold over from our pre k-mod games.

I couldn't get your other game to crash either. but holy crap, playing on deity , I'm lucky to manage prince on this mod. AI is so much better then the vanilla.

Karadoc: You've done some excellent work on the AI code. I've just hit the early medieval period. Playing Monarch I think. I usually win at Emperor without difficulty. The AI is giving me a serious run for my money. The Romans just landed >8 knights and macemen using a multi ship fleet. I've crushed the Ethiopians down to their last city and was mobilising to take it when the Romans landed.

I've only just teched to Civil Service. I'm running a dominion strat and binary tech.

I highly recommend this mod. The AI is playing smarter than in the Better AI mod.

Alright, I'll try using the direct IP thing. Thanks for checking.

Yeah, my partner didn't believe me that this mod was harder. We can't even beat regular Deity games yet, even by working together like we do (working together like that is harder than it sounds though). We were probably going to lose that game, too. It's funny watching the AI smash each other with archer rushes, though

We actually only play as a team now. We typically play random leaders, large maps with 4 others teams of 2, worst(hardest) AI pairing I can remember was Willem and Giggles, holy tech monsters with large numbers of units. Been run over by the romans and the zulus more then once. My friend is a real builder at heart and almost always techs better then I do, but I make war better so we usually compliment each others play style fairly well. I must try the hub map again with k-mod, before the AI was too stupid to do things like a naval invasion if they could go by land. Now you need to watch the coast as well, could make the game on hub much more interesting.

We use K-Mod in team multiplayer games for a few months now. In the beginning of the development immortal was winnable in around 80% of the games (large or huge world).
Nowadays we are really happy to win from time to time on immortal, and we are only able to win in marathon games.
So Karadoc  !

Bug: My teampartner told me that he couldn't use the button to select one type of unit in a stack anymore. With ctrl+left click it works, only the button may be corrupt.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

About the unit selection bug; I don't properly understand what you mean. So that I can understand better, please tell me what button(s) you are pressing; what you expect to happen; and what actually happens.

I currently can't think of any way to select all units of a particular type other than with ctrl+left click. So if there was another way, I may well have broken it without ever knowing it existed!
