Kal-el's Unit Concept Sketches

we'll see, my time is somwhat occupied for the next two weeks, but after that I may have some freedom to draw. One of the big problems is finding inspiration. I tend to go on spurts of drawing a lot, and the getting burned out on it for a while, then picking it back up and doing a few pictures all at once, then slowing down, then stopping, then picking it all back up again.

well, aisde from the on little art project you so gracious picked up for me, perhaps you'd consider giving a shot at making an Illyrian warrior?

rather intriging people; closelly related to the Northern and Central Italian peoples- so much so that even ina ncient times, Illyrian names for peoples on the east coast of Italy wasnt uncommon, and culturally, they were more or less a cross between Roman and Celtic; after they're conqoured, they remanined quite important; mant people blame teutoburg forest for stopping Roman expansion; in reality, whil eit was a major even, it wasnt what stopped Roman expension; the Illyrian rebellion was a far more serious manner; it took years to settle, and, no one really knows why but its the only war in Romes Imperial history were several Roman legions joined the rebellion! (thier is one other event that is similer, where a Roman commander, fed up with the curruption in the republic, took his troops to what is now portugal, trianed them, trained local peoples in wars of Rome, combined with the natrual spanish cavalrymen, he had an army that beat every thing that was sent against it; it was only internal betrayal that stopped him) after that, the Illyrians become Romanized, and after native Itallians stop joining the legions in large numbers, its thier Itallian brethren who pick up the clack in the second and third centures, and thsi led directlly to many of the emperors of that period being Illyrians- of course, after Illyrians, (and spainards) for what ever reason stopped joining en masse, the western empire was fooked.

heres a helmet; apperentlly, resources that were once on the net that were fine sources to put together an illyrian arnt thier anymore; so I'll have to draw a base picture (assuming your interested)

Yeah, I know that helmet.
It's an exhibit in my local museum. Museums exhibits would be a start. I went to the Thessalonike museum the other day and noticed part of the exhibits are on tour in the US, so check you local museums in case they're in your city(though I thought it's in New York, but not sure).

Another option could be the AoE short swordsman. That should be close enough. Interesting map you got yourself there.

AOE units blow conpared to custum made civ units ;)

the hands that hold the pisol and sword woudl be better off switched IMO, but otherwise, a very awesome drawing :)

Holy cow (moo) that would make one heck of a unit, I wonder what a 1500-1800's Roman ship would look like to go with this dude.

Awesome sketch, I love the style.

I'm back from my "trip", and I was able to do a couple drawings while away. Specifically, I did a Polynesian guy, two "what if" American characters, and started work on a third American. I will scan them in tomorrow (it's late here) and post them then.

cool stuff :D
