Hi,

I'm thinking of resurrecting an old Civ 3 succession game to get a better understanding for how the AI (and human players) cope with the new, hopefully improved Naval concepts.

Here's the idea. Archipelago map. I'm thinking of English since they did so much for international trade and seamanship.

Variant rules:

- Must be first to circumnavigate the globe. If not, the civ who managed it should be hunted down and killed like the seadogs they are.
- Number of naval units should always be at least twice that of the number of cities - coastal start a bit of a necessity. Haven't really thought about work boats, but they should probably be included.

Any other thoughts?

Am proposing a 24 hour got it, 48 play.

Hey there Balastulin! How goes the ship building? Its great to see you trying to start this game for Civ 4. Unfortunately I don't have the time to join this one, but I'll be watching. Too bad you can't be the Koreans again.

Maybe you should try one of those new world maps. That way the navy has a purpose - get to the new world first. Anyhow have fun. :D

Lurk comment: Work boats sorta disappear into nets when set to actually work so I'm not sure that should be counted.

Sounds fun but I'm already doing too many SG's. Although 1 is almost done already and 2 others are awaiting the patch to start I guess. I'll be watching though :)

yeah workboats are a cheap workaround for this variant. They are bound to the coast/cultural (limited scouting) and have default 0 power. They are really only good for exploiting seaborn resources and if one builds extras it's under the idea of exploiting future resources due to new lands or predicted net shredding.

Seems to me that circumnaving would be at least partially doable with galleys if the islands are close enough, if you are fast enough to avoid cultural borders. I'll run a few arch maps to see. Otherwise a predictable push towards caverals.

I've been seriously neglecting the sea based game so far, but gotta learn it sometime! If you want a noob in let me know.

Cheers!

You could set up a deadline, like "double the # of boats over cities" by 0 AD, which is probably doable.

Dead for the moment, unless there are people interested since this thread has been bumped?...

Alright, i'm in if you take me. :)
This variant will slow us down quite a bit in the beginning. We should take a chiv that starts with fishing, i think.

I'm up for this too. As long as its a standard size/normal speed game.

I think this is do-able from the beginning, i.e. have to build 2 galleys before our first settler. Then another two galleys before our second settler. Would slow us down a LOT at the beginning so probably need to be Noble or Prince level at most??

Civlisation wise, yes we would need fishing but also financial I think to get an extra coin from all the coast tiles we are going to have in our empire. Civs with this combination include:
America/Washington, +Organised, +Farming, Navy SEAL
England/Victoria, +Expansive, +Mining, Redcoat
England/Elizabeth, +Philosophical, +Mining, Redcoat

Organised might be useful for the quick lighthouses, and Navy Seals for our amphibious assaults... (once we actually catch up from the slow start! :D ) so Washington looks a good fit for this game do you think?

Till & Balastulin, you guys still available for this game?
We only need one more (at least!) to get this (finally!) started. I think it will be a really interesting game, great idea!

Btw, just thought of something. What happens if one of our naval units is destroyed and we are at the 2 x cities limit? Do we need to immediately switch production to build another one (to make up our depleted navy ASAP!) or do we wait till the next build order is completed?

Just spent an hour playing this variant as Washington on a small archipelago map, at Prince level just for some fun :mischief:

Very slow start, but by 700BC I have stonehenge & great lighthouse (thanks to stone near my capital) and am leading the two civs I've met so far - Louis just declared war on one of my cities near his capital, might have put it too close. But my warrior defeated two of his warriors, phew! Also just circumnavigated the globe with a galley, so it is possible. I have 3 cities and 5 galleys, so am building another galley before I can found the next city.

Screenshot attached. Notice home island denuded of trees :D Am going to get that tundra forest on the island north of Washington soon too! And yeah, I waited too long to get Archery, was going for judaism which I missed. I think it would be *very* hard to get any early religions playing this variant.

I'll try this too if available. Should be a fun variant as I have yet to really focus on the naval aspects early on.

I am interested in this game although I have never played a SG before. I don't know how to post screenshots or use the autologger but I am willing to learn.
I think the naval aspect of the game is always downplayed and it would be fun to rule the waves. :)

Ha Ha!

Two people living in Korea! It shall be done. I will start this SG and post variant rules though tonight I have my office Christmas party, with accompanying bottles of Soju, so it shall be tomorrow that it starts. I propose 20 turns each for the first round, followed by ten apiece.

Having played a couple of testers, I think a minimum of 1 naval vessel per city would be good. It wouldn't cripple us early, and if we need more we'll build them.

We HAVE to be the first civ to circumnavigate the world and if we're not we HAVE to track down and destroy the civ that beat us to it.

Wonders? Great Lighthouse should be built by us and we should technologically beeline for compass and optics.

Thoughts on these matters please.

Thormodr, uploading files is a cinch, but my bosss is walking toward me so I'll explain later.

Awesome. My boss is coming too so we can talk later. ;)

PS. Soju will kill you :P

I'm fairly familiar with this as it's my way of playing anyway. The first Civ4 single game I played was on a Terra map - where it is essential to be the first to discover the New Continent. The result was, I'd almost filled out the new continent (with 7 cities I've built myself and 3 I've captured from the Babarians) when the first AI finally builds a Galleon.

In my experience, it helps to abandon the early religious and related techs aka the middle part of the tech tree. Give priority to the top and bottom part of the tech tree, trade the middle part techs from other nations if conditions are acceptable, it's not hard to come back later and win the race for Christianity and/or Islam.

Uploading files works like email. Just click on the 'attachments' icon, upload the save/graphics file, close the upload screen, click on 'attachment' icon again and you'll be able to add it to your messages.

It seems as if a commerce-heavy approach to this game generally will work well, considering how many of our cities will be coastal and such.

PS how many fellow s. koreans in this one already? 안녕하세요:p though i'm not overeager to hijack this thread and turn it into one big azn lovefest or anything :p

안녕하세요. 잘지내세요?
시브퍼 (Civ 4) 아주좋아요 ㅋㅋㅋ

What I really want to know is how to take screenshots and how to use this autologger that people seem to be using. I want to do a good job and not a half *ssed one. :P
What will be our Civ? I assume one that starts with fishing. ^^

AZN or DMZ?

Well, if you guys check out the original Masters of the High Seas thread, you'll see the irony of my moving to Korea!

Was thinking that England would be good from a historical as well as technological perspective (Fishing, obviously, and Mining, helping us toward Compass).

At least one vessel per city. Have to get Magellan's or destroy the Civ which beats us to it. Have to research Naval techs if they're available. Any other thoughts?

I shall make a start tomorrow (Sunday). Have to go shopping in sunny Haeundae first (joy of joys).
