Landschneckt into winged hussar?

I was thinking about a Poland domination strat that involves getting landshneckts and upgrading them into hussars, so they retain their pillaging and city capping bonuses. I play mostly on deity/immortal, I know that on immortal this could probably work out but I'm interested if someone has tried this on deity.

Obviously, this would require you to get commerce, which isn't hard considering poland gets so much policy-wise.

Thoughts?

edit: I meant to post this in strategy, mods if you can move, thank you..

It's an interesting idea. All that would be necessary is to make a good amount of money & stockpile money. Since Landschneckts are pretty cheap & upgrading isn't to bad, it's not a bad idea, & Winged Hussars are scary. Although the big issue I see is that most Deity players wil say that that money should be used for Research Agreements or rush buying science buildings. Especially since Winged Hussars aren't ideal for taking cities. I might just have to try this :)

Largest problem with this is that the upgrade to lancer is extremely expensive, and you're coupling who's with a unit you can only buy. It had the benefit of not being reliant at all on production, but that's a huge gold stockpile you're gonna need around the time, as others have said, you could be spending on buying factories/public schools. I'm sure you'll be fine though cause its Poland.

One of the benefits of Poland is extra XP for horse units via the stable, which works well with the Winged Hussar free shock promo. And when you get a free level-one promo you want your initial XP to go on top of it, not under, where it's wasted.

A city with just barracks can build Winged Hussars from scratch that are one more promo away from March, or have double-medic. Within a few battles you'll have a force of Hussars that are self-healing at 20 HP per turn in enemy territory. That's building them from scratch. I wouldn't trade that up for fast-pillage.

The only civ with a clear advantage in upgrading Landschneckts to the lancer line is the Zulu, since the Ikanda gives the special promos to the Landschneckt that it wouldn't otherwise give to the horse line. Zulu Landschneckt-lancers have one extra movement and extra flanking/cover, they are great.

Landschneckts don't get the unique impi promotion though, do they?

I think that the base of this idea is quite good, but I'd rather just build the lancers from scratch, as its likely you can spare the production at that point in the game, and save the culture and gold.

However afterwards, you should upgrade the lancers, whilst the anti-tank guns are a bit meh, a swarm of march helis that can knock enemies back? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! [pimp]

They get the Buffalo promos. It's not the Impi promotion. It's from the Ikanda, and applies to pre-gunpowder melee units. Hence, Landschneckts.

Buy a Landschneckt in a city with Ikanda, Armory, Military Academy and it will have all three Buffalo promos out the door.

Would say GhostSalsa is right about building the Winged Hussars from scratch - for the purpose of combat ability at least. But if you're going commerce anyway then the Landsknechts you may buy will have been around for a while before Metallurgy, so they'll have had time to earn lots of xp already. Also it seems to me that for any civ Landsknecht -> Lancer is great, even with very little xp, as a super-pillaging unit to run around behind enemy lines.

I thought a better approach would be Songhai landsknect-lancers. x6 loot when capturing a city with them. The only time this approach becomes useful is when you have artilleries and you add the sentry promotion to see cities from 3 tiles away.

When winged hussars attack, the victim unit gets pushed back. Winged hussars come with that promotion as well.

Thing is, choppers can't cap cities. Am I the only person who likes choppers? I remember the goodness of nuke+chopper+paradrop from civ4, so I guess I like them because of that even if it isn't as good as bombers in this game.

Choppers are great in civ 5 because they are so much mobile than the armors. Choppers can reach up to 7 or 8 turns per turn.

yeah, choppers are like the nuke sub of the land...the most raw mobility if you don't include the paradrop or XCOM ability. It always annoyed me that they need to embark though...it isn't realistic and it would make the helis so much more attractive if they could fly over water too.

This used to happen in civilization 2. I don't know why the helicopters had to change like that. I'm guessing that happened because helicopters that flew over the water lost health.

Alot less work than creating UnitClassThatCanFlyOverWaterButDiesIfItEndsItsTurnThereAndCanBeCargoOnADestroyerOrAnAircraftCarrier
