Regarding the info that the german Landsknechts only bonus is cheaper to produce my question is will it also be cheaper to upgrade? Cause if you only upgrade existing spearmen you would forfeit a production bonus..

It is likley that upgrading TO it will be cheaper but upgrading FROM it will be more expensive; in Civ4 the upgrade cost was tied to the hammer differential.

Movement: ?; Strength: ?
Technology: Civil Service
Notes: German Unique Unit. Although it's definite that the Landsknecht replaces the Pikeman, and it looks like they are armed with halberds, the symbol for the unit is the Zweihänder greatsword. One report suggests that the Landsknecht has the same stats as the Pikeman, but is cheaper to produce.

That's just the words of a previwer, its not been confirmed.

Although if they are right then, of course, germany is starting to look lame. I mean i can deal with them having a slightly shoddy ability if they have access to uber cool panzer and ladnsknecht, but if those units aren't uber then germany isn't either.

Most of Arioch's site is actually taken from screencaps. In fact, I'm pretty sure he hasn't trusted any info from reviewers unless they post it on this site.

I still think Germany was shafted regardless of units. Situational, limited-use units are no excuse to terrible civ abilities.

Well, let's maybe find out how often CiV's "has units on parity with the highest-tech civ" barbs spawn on difficulties that matter before we decide that Germany's ability is terrible. Also, it looks like there's no screenshot confirming the Landsknecht's uniqueness, since Arioch's site just says "One report suggests that the Landsknecht has the same stats as the Pikeman, but is cheaper to produce." Since there's no corroborating screenshot and apparently the report "suggests" it rather than outright saying it, it's certainly not confirmed.

I agree though that Germany's not looking all that exciting though. Since Pikemen look like they're going to be your spammed unit in medieval era (only one other than Crossbows that don't require a strategic resource), it could have been very nice as that could lead to a much bigger "backbone" of your army. However, 1UPT waters that bonus down a bit. Still helpful to have more units to plug holes in your front line, but most of the time they'll probably just be sitting there. Of course, this all depends on 1) that report actually being accurate and 2) the size of the hammer reduction.

He doesn't have the stats listed and we know much of that info has changed since some of the previews. Hopefully it will have a better bonus than cheaper production (unless it is significantly cheaper to produce)

Well cheaper production could be tied to cheaper maintenance costs as well (we're not sure how unit maintenance works)

If the Landsknecht has the same physical stats as the pikeman (I thought it was a spearman replacement for some reason) then it will also have a special ability on top of that, say like the legions road building, or the janissaries instant heal. It won't simply cost a bit less, all the UU's have something that distinguishes them and makes them more powerful than the normal unit.

Well i sure hope for something special cause otherwise it would be gimped. Landsknechts have been a fundamental instrument of medieval / renessaice warfare so it should be accounted for accordingly.
