Some of KK's lines come out of the Yuan-era poetry that he loved. Others were meant to sort of invoke it. For Trieu, we were going for that "list of those who have slighted me" feel; a lot of these will be more present in the non-voiced bits. As far as references to Thang Long and Hanoi... yes, they're anachronistic. I love the name, though, of the "Lake of the Returned Sword," and love the grandeur of medieval Thang Long. Better than "Yep, still up here on that mountain, plottin' your murder..." But a hardcore Vietnam history buff will see some anachronisms. Above all, I really didn't want to refer to any American War tropes, as fan service-y as they would feel.

I love these kind of references to leaders who were writers and poets themselves. :D

I like Trieu's choice of pronouns. Those pronouns mean she looks down on/places herself above the listener in terms of social and power rankings. And she uses those pronouns in all of her lines, starting straight from Hello to Defeated.

@Red Khan I'll appreciate it if you upload Ba Trieu and Kublai Khan's lines into Soundcloud when you have time? :D

    Hopefully tomorrow. :)

But if you are eager to listen to them, they are already uploaded to Fandom wiki by our fellow civfanatic @robal1991. Bà Triệu's lines are even already transcribed and I think it's a record for non-English speaking leader. :)

Reminds me of when Gandhi declares war on you in Civ5

"I received a report that a regiment of soldiers crossed the border between our empires. ::grouchomarxface::"

Does this dude ever get angry?

I actually quite like Kublai’s leader model. He might be missing the hat but I think he looks, well... like the great Khağan.

I wonder if there is Yuan poetry written in Mongolian, or it's only about the English translations?

At least his Civilopedia quote is an English translation from a letter written in Classical Chinese, but since he talks in Mongolian it's certainly a translation.

I had my mom listened to Ba Trieu's lines, and she said Vietnamese reminds her of her native Hainanese Chinese dialect a bit. And Mongolian sounds like Korean to her.

I can't understand the crap Kublai and Genghis is saying as Korean-New Zealander.
I don’t find these two languages are similar at all.

Hainanese is actually one of the best contenders when it comes to similarities with Vietnamese (at least on the Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary) given that both experienced the s->t change. They also have implosive consonants to add a bit more fuel on the fire.

I am an admin there and I intended to transcribe all the lines when I got home from work since I can't type Vietnamese diacritics at work, and less than an hour after our admin Robal put up the sound files for her responses, some random dudes just took the glory from me :( I'm pretty sure that is a record.

Turns out that there is. I wonder if original lines in Mongolian were used.

There is an Altaic language theory that puts Koreanic and Mongolic languages into one family. But even if it's true, that is of course is a big stretch. For example Indo-European family include languages all across Eurasia, from Irish to Hindi.

I'll be the obligatory, but unwilling, pedant here :p "Northern Vietnamese" probably sounded much different when she was around a long time ago.

Same as how Seondeok uses modern Korean and yet that is probably not how she spoke in her time.

Here is a reconstruction of old Korean, i.e. Sillan language. I can't vouch for its accuracy though.

Altaic fell out of favor decades ago, and most linguists who still push it are crackpots--and even when it was considered a thing Koreanic and Japonic were considered dubious members. There are still some linguists who believe in a smaller family of Mongolic and Tungusic, though.
