So as of late my laptop has been shutting off constantly like every few hours. I noticed that it starts to shut off because I could hear the heat coming from it and the sound. I wonder if it could just be a overheating problem or if my computer is just old ?

You should be able to feel hot air coming out of the side. If there does not seem to be a lot of volume, then dust could be blocking the air and causing the computer to over heat. You could try vacuuming out the dust, but the laptop may need to have at least the keyboard removed to get to the dust.

Definitely sounds heat related. A lot of laptops run really hot these days. I would definitely check for dust clogs.

I've had a lot of heat-related laptop problems over the years - it pay to take precautions. I use a cooling pad with fans in it whenever I'm gaming on my laptop. I clean it out regularly, etc.

The problem is, heat damage is hard-to-impossible to undo in a laptop.

Good luck!

Would a laptop cooling fan work out if I bought one? I have a laptop cooling fan but not the cord for it.

Cooling pads are great to use from the start. Keeping the laptop off of carpet and blankets which allow dust and lent to be sucked into the laptop. Make sure there is adequate air flow underneath. Any fan that blows air around the outside of the laptop is helpful. How ever if there is no proper air flow internally, that is the damage that needs to be avoided the most. The laptop will turn itself off to protect itself, or crash when the cpu starts to fail, because of over heating.

Get a can of compressed air, blow out the vents from both directions.

I'm not big on laptop cooling fans, laptops are engineered to function within specifications on level surface. If your laptop isn't doing so, and cleaning the dust doesn't fix the problems you've other hardware problems that an extra fan isn't going to fix.

It's pretty much impossible to damage any modern cpus with heat, they simply throttle back to avoid damage.
