I know that the Nederlands were spanish untill the end of the 16th century.
I think the flag dates back the 17th century.

I also know that William of Orange (willemvanoranje?
wink.gif
) of the house of Nasauwas a great leader in the fight for independance. So I'll make a guess and say that the first version was used by him. I think I have read somewere that it was all orange.

The flag that is used now dates from the 17th century, the original from the 16th. It was first used by Willem van Oranje-Nassau and by his troops. Back then (1568-) the colors were orange-white-blue. You weren't entirely correct, but still: next question to you.

I wasn't right about the color of the original flag.

Next: staying on vexillology.....what are the "pan-slavic" colours and where do they come from?

Clue: There is a relationship with the flag of the Nederlands.

The pan-slavic colours are blue white and red. Don't know why but I'll be cheeky and ask the next question anyway:

Q: What are the worlds 5 largest Islands?

1 -> Groenland
2 -> New-Guinea
3 -> Borneo
4 -> Madagascar
5 -> Sumatra

Next : And the five after are ?

Eeh, well. Nice try, right? At least Madagascar was a right answer. Didn't think of Groenland, stupid me...

The complete answer was:

The Cross stands for christian faith.
The nine stripes stand for the nine sylabs of the Greek national moto: Freedom or Death. E-lef-the-ri-a (freedom) e (or) Tha-na-tos (death).
The blue and white stand for the white and blue clothes of the fighters of 1821 against Turkey. That's because the flags were made from their clothes.
Now that's just one explenation. There are many more.

I'll let you find the symbol that was taken off. It's the kind of things you like; you royalist! (I am too )

But anyway your question!

Remembered the Cross as the Greek cross; the colors ring a bell; but the number of stripes!!! I don't think I could have looked that one up. Gonna have to learn that word: Eleftheria.

Pathei mathos, mathei gelos!

(Oh, where is a Greek alphabet when I need it now!)

Top Ten Islands in the World:

Question: Where is the "original" Mt. Darwin located?

Is this the place?

I found it here

Here's a pic

Mt. Darwin (13,831 ft.). Much of the summit area is a large plateau, often cited as being an example of the landscape prior to the uplift of the Sierra. The actual summit is the blocky pinnacle of rock to the southeast of the plateau, pictured here.

Could you give us the answer?

The original Mt. Darwin is located in Chilean Tierra del Fuego, just off the Beagle Channel. Named after Charles Darwin, who served as the naturalist upon the H.M.S. Beagle, the ship that charted the coasts of the region between 1832 and 1834.

Well since there is no other question I'll go 4 it.

Next Question

Which country has the smallest coastline of all?

Trick question.

Answer: Tie, numerous... Coastline 0 miles: Switzerland, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Vatican City, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Macedonia, Chad, Niger, Mali, Uganda, Botswana, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Bolivia, Pataguay, Afganistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzatan, Belarus.

These come to mind. There may be more I will think of later (some may not be spelled exactly right).

Of non-island "major" countries that have coastline, probably Moldova or Jordan.

The absolute shortest nonzero length coastline would likely be Monaco, because I have actaully been there and walked it.

No I didn't mean those countries w/no c/line, I said the smallest....

Yes you're right monaco has the sortest: 4,1 km.

Then comes Bosnia-Hersegovina, Jordan.......

Moldova has no coastline.

Oh and there is no need to precise "non-island countries" since the smallest island state of all (Nauru) already has 28 km of coastline which places it 5th.

Aaaaaaaaanyway....you're up.

I remember walkling it on a couple visits, and it took less than an hour.

Nauru was in my mind, but since it was an island (lots of coastline), I figured it was behind Monaco and Jordan.

I've never been to Moldova, but when I flew by it once, my charts seemed to show that it had some coasstline at the Dnestr River, with the Black Sea. Could have been wrong, though, depending on where the river ends and the sea begins.

Aaaaaaaaanyway....you're up.

Does that mean I should ask a question?

If so, I'll think of one after I get a little work done after while.

EDIT: Spelling
