Elizabeth -3: As I said before, wish she had some personality, which the remaining mediocre leaderscreens (Darius, Bismarck, Augustus) did better.

Askia +1: Best vanilla leader screen, beautiful colors and animation. Askia himself looks really cool too. It doesn't give a very likeable impression of the guy and his empire, but contrary to Alex and Oda it has interesting details to admire. Funny how the least known leader of vanilla seems to have the most effort in his leaderscreen.

Gustavus (-3): Yeah yeah I voted him up last time, but I can change my mind, can't I? When I upvoted him I talked about the background. Downvote goes for his appearance

Pachacuti (+1): Sitting down when nice and standing up when upset. At least he's not glued to his throne, and I love the way the camera moves across the village. Beautiful.

Also, is war and peace themes taken into account? Or is that another type of elimination?

Also, is war and peace themes taken into account? Or is that another type of elimination?

Some people have mentioned them in their rationale, others have not. Voter's choice.

Heck, the specs on my PC are so low, I'm making my choices based on the "frozen" screens (where it is a still picture with voiceover).

And mine for today...

America -3. Today I looked at the civs closest to elimination: America, Siam, Austria. I decided to vote based on the one I think should be eliminated first. I'm surprised at the Austria hate: isn't part of the reason we all hate her so much because the screen is actually well-designed? And the background is quite nice and makes me feel like I'm in Austria visiting her. Siam's isn't as strong, but the nice detail on the armor and the beauty of the space are strong. Washington just doesn't offer much in comparison.

Pocatello +1: Someone downvoted it because of the background saying that it wasn't special. I actually love the screen for it's simplicity: Most of these other leaders had massive wealth at their disposal, and so had resplendent palaces they could use. Pocatello's "nation" was something entirely different, quite different even from the Iroquois, and it is well-reflected in the simplicity of the leaderscreen. Also: unlike many of the leaderscreens, Pocatello doesn't looks like a super-model - he looks like an average guy. (Which is something I love about the recent waves of leaderscreens like Gajah Mada, Ahmad al-Mansur, Maria Theresa, etc.)

I don't see anything that prohibits the posting of images, so I'm going to leave this here. How this screen isn't an automatic Top 5 I'll never know. I've had to spend 5 votes on it already because it was getting downvoted!

Agreed with Truenarnian. I'm also surprised why Neby got eliminated so fast - he has green fire and loves to drop cups, how cool is that? I'm not even mentioning his great voice acting which I don't think could possibly be made more fitting.

+1 to Askia. It looks badass and awesome, simple as that.

However it has a flaw - when I saw someone got a BURNING CITY in his leaderscreen while someone like Genghis Khan has a green steppe, I just HAD to look what this guy did. I thought he's like the cruelest guy alive who did stuff so bad, even ol' Genghis would be like "HELL NO"

But if we believe what I've read, this guy was actually... peaceful. (well, by the standards of his age) And generous.

Seriously? Genghis Khan who conquered so much stuff and did so much horrid stuff is just peacefully standing in the field, while a guy who pretty much only conquered one city has a burning city background and sinister music which really reminds me of Lion King. (I don't know why...! Whenever I hear Askia's peace theme, I instantly think of Scar's song with the hyenas)

However this weird thing, which is pretty much like giving Gandhi a leaderscreen where he has sunglasses and there's a nuclear mushroom right behind him, is more than compensated by how great the leaderscreen looks, and its' further complimented by Askia's awesome voice acting. He just sounds cool, and I love his grunty "MMHMM" when he listens to a trade offer. Meeting this guy is usually a pleasure, even if I know he's usually just gonna forward settle next to me, piss everyone off and get destroyed/reduced to one city. He can be a reasonable friend though.

-3 to Pocatello. This screen is just nothing special and he's the worst of the remaining leaderscreens. I also don't like how he looks and sounds.

Haha it makes sense, both songs use a marimba (or its african counterpart) prominently.

Uhhh.....guys.......
One leaderscreen disappeared from the list waaaay back on page 6. Adding him back:

That is clearly Eric XIV, not Gustavus Adolphus. I think they meant to have Eric in the background photo only...but somehow messed up the concept and copied him as the leader. The only thing they got right was the, over the shoulder, sash.

I took them a long while to edit the Kubia Khan/Qin Shi Huang mix up of Civ IV but it eventually happened. I think they need to fix this one.

How does the leader screen with the wrong leader in it not finish last? ha

+1 Washington: The room has nice elegant "colonial" feel.

-3 Gustavus: Reason above

I wish every leader had an "Evil Stance" that activated whenever they had access to nuclear weapons.

Washington - 2 not voting this down right now, the background does look like some of the paintings of Washington made during his presidency

Harald Bluetooth - 26 - 3 = 23 - I fail to see the attraction of Harald Bluetooth's leaderscreen. It seems to just be a dull longboat.
William - 19
Haile Selassie - 22 + 1 = 23 - Haile Selassie's leaderscreen makes you feel as though you're entering the presence of one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century.

-3 Gustavus: The downvoting is getting tougher, I love it when he appears in my game. Never really heard Swedish before and it's my new favorite language thanks to this guy. Very ear-pleasing for a germanic language. But his faulty appearance is not easy to forgive.

+1 Pacal: His headress made me do it. Quite a handsome fellow too. Really like his voice too in his evil laugh, his DoW and how he dramatically drops on his knees after defeat.

Ok, can we have some perspective here? Many of these leaders were depicted without beautiful portraits to base them on. Gustavus's parlor is warm and inviting. I can imagine it snowing outside with that fireplace roaring in the background. I linger on this leaderscreen a bit more than the others, and I definitely thinks it deserves to stay a bit longer. I can forgive his semblance to Eric XIV, because in many instances we don't know what these leaders looked like. Take Harald Bluetooth (a crowd favorite), he did not have a portrait and he ended up looking like a Firaxis/Dreamworks collaboration of "How to Tame Your Pagan". And speaking of the uncanny valley...

So long Catherine! Your robot charms will not help you here! :scan:
