Every unit, building, wonder etc. is doing something that is good for *our* civilization.

Well why can't we build something that will benefit *all* citizens on our planet (once connection has ben made with them).

For example, why is "Cure for Cancer" increasing happiness only in our cities? It could in all cities around the world. Giving us diplomatic prestige, respect, culture...

There could be a "war negates effects" for some, but otherwise, we could just build a better world.

Of course, this should be a small part of the game.

Possible wonders beneficial to all:

The great silk road: all nations on the same continent that have adjacent borders can trade resources without roads.
The Sacrifice of Prometheus: Every civ gains a tech that at least 2 other civs already have.
Caritas: Reduced chance of killing citizens while bombing in all cities.
Internet (changed): Acts as a library in all cities around world.
Cure for Cancer: increases happiness by 1 point in all cities around world

etc.

Or maybe they would appear as soon as all civs combined have reached a certain point.

Examples:
Internet: Planet has X amount of computer labs.
Cure for Cancer: Planet has Y amount of hospitals.

If there's a type of victory that rewards altruism, then to me this could be a great thing. You could play a mean-hearted selfish strategy to win... or you could be the nicest dude in the world and win.

I meant this altruism in the way that Britain gave France back to Germany. Diplomatic benefits in its current form isn't rewarding enough, unless you have forced-locked alliances (which I'm for in some shape or form). Otherwise players will just break them. But still, I'm talking about giving points for doing great things: "historical victory".

This could just as easily apply to building France building the statue of liberty for America. Or building some kind of wonder that gives back to everyone.

I absolutely agree. The players should be able to work more deeply together for a joint victory, by altruistic actions, like the Statue of Liberty. And at a certain point, two friendly civs should be able to form a confederation or so.
Why not?

These wonders would still help the one who builds them. They could generate money as a tourist attraction, and they would also give loads of culture. Finally, if someone went to war with you, they would lose all of the benefits, so it's an incentive for people to be friendly with you.
