Hello forum!

As some of you may or may not be aware, the idea of a civ IV youtube walkthrough was tosses around in the Fall, but never came to fruition. I completely forgot about it over time.

Well, someone did a let's play, but on settler/marathon . That is the only Civ IV let's play I'm aware of, which prompts me to do something I never thought I would: upload videos to youtube!

Just recently, I downloaded Cam Studio and have been toying around with it. It seems I really can get the audio functioning. Now, I just need to get the video quality balanced between functional and viewable.

Let's hear it! What leader do you guys want to see? I think I can actually pull this off, much to my own mass embarrassment, but hey...it could be worse.

First video:

I've turned it into a play list, so you should be able to see all of my videos through this function.

Saves!

I am of no use doing this YouTube stuff other than viewing the Gandhi Loss.

But if you are going to show 1 civilization to the world, it has to be ROME! I vote Julius Caesar, and my only suggestion is to play a continents or hemispheres game so there is some part of the world left after you destroy your continent with PRATS!:D

I agree with this idea. :D

Yeah I used to make Runescape videos back in the day (yuck it up) anyway I used camtasia at 30 frames/second no audio, and had it save as .wmv as the camtasia file format sucked in terms of editability and uploadability (two new words I win).

If you need more help pm me.

I remember I used to make AMVs by using Hypercam to record videos. There's Mediaconverter for that now but those was the good ol' days.

How about we use Huayna Capac? Good noob combo, since FIN and IND really help for the lower levels.

One thing TMIT... Don't call it the same name as the newbie youtube game - give it a new name of your choosing.

As for which leader/settings, I don't really agree that Rome is an obvious choice as that would not be a typical game. I am more interested in seeing how you would normally play with a fairly average leader - one where there is not such an obvious gambit to take advantage of.

If I'd suggest anyone it would be Mehmed because most, including you IIRC, believe he is the most well-rounded leader.

Looking forward to some real speed-civving demos! :D

Should be interesting if you can get it to work ok. If it's a walkthrough type game where you're explaining as you go it will take time - i suppose you could do it in intervals. You'd probably be able to edit out all "thinking time" and all the checking on civics/techs stuff along with any between turn time. That seems like it would require A LOT of editing. If you weren't limited on video length size (are you?) then you could skip most of this editing. Seems like it would take forever to put it together though - but would be fun to watch if you can pull it off.

I'd say pick an average leader/average start for it. Probably play at emperor or monarch since i'd imagine on immortal you can't fly through the game as quick. Good luck with it.

Well, you must think at least for 5 or 10 seconds a turn anyway - that's like 3000 seconds that can be cut out! Probably a bigger time saver in your case would be troop movements and attacks. I'd imagine that is a bigger chunk of time in your games. I'd also recommend normal speed for this - since it should be faster, and more importantly it's the speed i play!

I'd love to see this, would help alot of people like me that are trying to learn the game from the upper level players.Would really help us noble and prince players to get better.I follow the walkthroughs alot but still struggle and this idea i think would help a great deal. Thanks TMIT if you get it running.

If you want to start small just play to 1 AD or something. That's really the most important part and it takes like 30 minutes - edited down to 10 or 15. I'd like to see a game on emperor/immortal with no great commerce tiles in the first 2-3 cities. Go for a UN or domination win since they are the fastest (other than AP), and most common. And while you're playing this don't worry about the immense amount of pressure of people seeing your every move in real time.:)

I'm fine with the logistics of the actual let's play, really. I think I can handle it. Right now my only snag is getting the freebie cam studio to handle the encoding properly. It moves on time, but the screen will flicker the sprite/forest layer on and off. Certainly, you could still tell what I'm doing no problems, but it doesn't look pretty.

Edit: It's not a problem outside of full screen. I'm still debating between two codecs. Test runs show I can get through to almost chariot rushing in the first 10 minutes, and that includes the introduction.

Basically, compared to some LPs out there with 70+ parts, this will be short. If I get 10 min/part and a game takes me 3 hours, that's less than 20 parts. Pretty simple actually.

Edit 2:

One thing TMIT... Don't call it the same name as the newbie youtube game - give it a new name of your choosing.

Actually, I'm using the same name as him. Walkthrough series where a player plays through a game start to finish and documents some aspects of gameplay are universally called "let's play" on YouTube. Essentially, you can get LP's of virtually anything on there - I'm a big fan of certain guys.

Hi

They both look good so far and more stuff getting done than the worker worker worker settler worker build order of the other lets play :)

I think explaining your choices instead of talking about enemy leaders might have been good. To new people what you build seems rather random. Why did you build a warrior to defend capital? The first warrior could just have escorted the settler.
