Lets talk about Jesus

I knew this thread wouldn't stay nice for long :shakehead .

I like the fact that Jesus is impossible to see to those that havn't found him, but impossible not to see to those that have. Only those that have might know what I mean.

that is very well put :goodjob:

Just a question, how does one find Jesus. I only found him through the New Testement and his biography in wiki. I never ran into anyone preaching to me the gosples nor been whitnessed.

That doesn't supprise me too much. You hear differemt stories from different people really. One of the best analogies I have heard is that you dont find god but rather god finds you. It isn't really a question with a definate answer.

Theres a big difference between God, and Jesus.

Oh, enough of this "be nice to me! Help! I'm being oppressed!" business. If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen! This is a *public* forum, and where civility has always been expected in public forums of any kind, it does not render immunity to criticism - or even sarcasm. That's the very essence of the idea of the public *forum*. Exchange of views. If you want a thread where people just say nice things and constantly agree with you about your mythological figures, then go to a Christian forum ... imo, this isn't the place to be arbitrarily restricting expression and then bawling foul. Here, that's just baiting.

This is not a *public* forum, this is *Thunderfall's* forum.

Respect his rules. If you don't want to contribute to this thread, then don't post in it. Its the best way of letting these threads run their course.

I thought Jesus was the son of God . Can anyone with a Christian background elaborate on this (I am Christian, but I am uncatarized and know little of my faith)

Ok i hear so much crap about jesus, the church, Christians.

This is a thread were we are going to say nice things about stuff.

Whatever.

If you can't say any thing nice about something don'yt say anything at all ;)

As a Christian i don't want to banter endlessly about issues. Lets Enjoy life.

Just Listen.

People have free speech and can say what they like. (within site rules)

Simply telling them to shut up and think of ponies will get you nowhere.

:)

Why don't I tell you to only say nice things about satanism or atheism?

I bet you wouldn't want to play nice then!

Jesus was a man who existed in the classical age.
He was one among many prophets in Palestine in that distant era.
After his death, followers decided to form a religion based around him.
Historical perspective was pushed aside in favour of divine powers and fanciful adventures.

As it happened, the people in charge of this religion split into groups and formed
many different sects and ways to milk money and power from their new status
as self-proclaimed servants of Jesus. (Who was long-dead and unaware of any
of this.) It is doubtful if this humble prophet from the past would approve of the
myriad mind-games and greed all performed in his name in these times....

@Shadylookin, Dida, TankGuy, Civlord, Warman17, silver 2039 and Vietcong: please cut that out. (Dida, you can read this, and now I won't spend any more time on this.)
@frekk: I completely failed to see anyone saying "help I'm being oppressed". On the other hand, I saw atheistic drive-by jibes that would have been jumped on by every single mod if they had been made at Islam by Christians, for example.
(Try saying "The only good thing about Mohammed was that he appeared on a comedy show" outside of this thread's, and watch the flames... )
I never knew that the author specifying the subject of a single thread was baiting, either!
Rude is an excellent name for you.
:p

Now, back to the thread.

Jesus was opposed to organized religion. He came to make religion personal. He criticised the money-changers who made their living from the common religious folk and the Pharisees who made their living interpreting it and preaching it.
Now everyone can have a personal relationship with Jesus, that does not depend on any mediators.

Too little attention was paid to his words.
How true Christians should be recognized:
As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
What the heart is full of, the mouth speaks.
What he left for us:
Peace I give you: Not the peace the world gives, but my peace, which endures.
Making up (for) what we had done was more important than public piety:
If you are carrying an offering for the altar and you remember that you have done someone wrong, leave your offering and go first and be reconciled with them.
(to the Pharisees)
If you had known what this word meant: "I desire mercy, and not offerings", you would not have condemned the innocent.
He is a savior for the weak:
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
So will it be when the dead are raised. The body that is planted is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is planted in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is planted in weakness, it is raised in power.
We do not have a high priest who has no sympathy for or weakness, but one who was tried the same way as us.

(translations done by me from my Norwegian bible)

thisispete already mentioned the Beatitudes.

The grace he gives is unconditional. There is no question of "Do you pray enough?" or "Do you go to church every Sunday?".
There is simply forgiveness. If we ask for it, Jesus will give it.

...more later...

Exactly!

The way people are forced to perform religion nowadays is to pray to a human money-grabber, not to whatever source they seek.

Even an atheist can see organised religion is an invention of merchants to make money from faiths...

As I just said, the thread's author specified a subject. Willfully ignoring that subject in order to be able to make insults is not, last I checked, protected by freedom of speech. (A thread titled "Shut up and think about ponies" would be locked as spam, I suppose.)

And if you made a thread like that, I'd glance at it, and then politely not post in it.

I respectfully disagree on that point.

Spot on! :goodjob:

Trappings and works should never be the essential parts of any religion. Strong faith will bring about works of its own accord, and it is not outside the limits of normal respect to build a shrine or church for what you honor...
But still the Christian faith can have no other foundation than Christ himself!

If your faith demands offerings of any sort, it is a lie.

Jesus (as he's usually shown) had cool hair. Theres not much else i like about the man. Oh, he was good at magic tricks (water into wine, feeding the 5000, blah blah).
And of course, he was born on the same day at santa, which is pretty surprising.

Eric,

We can both agree that a real spiritual person goes straight to the help desk and does not wait and talk to staff in the lobby.

In other words, a person does not need to pay or go to a church to meditate or pray to their idol...

Medieval merchants picked that old Roman feast date and popularised it to tie everyone's
buying habits into the end of the traditional fiscal year. This is what I heard.

Makes sense from a typically human perspective.

Theres notihng to 'find'. He was a man who was crusified much like the thousands along the appian way after Sparticus' rebellion. Don't see any of them being flaunted as the son of God do you?

No, but that's because only Jesus rose from the dead, and is alive as we speak. :)
